Raw: Forum - Wishlist & Suggestions

Wishlist

Here a few things for the wishlist... I am aware this is all *low* priority, but mentioning things early on may turn out useful *later* on.
  1. Turn on HTML for the Forum? (Mainly for the Resource Sticky)... (since the Link Resources are now in phpBB, no longer needed)
  2. [lvlshot] tag -> max width 640x pixel, max height x480 pixel (or even x512 for European resolutions).
  3. The in-post link color is too much like white. This makes links almost impossible to notice: ***testlink***
  4. Some of the colors in the Post dialog, e.g. the frames there are too eye-poking IMO... (will get back to that).
  5. Is there some way to turn OFF the automatic "target=_new" for all links in posts? Opening a new window is not really what we want for the Resource Links. Anyone who wants a new window can Shift+click on links, or better Ctrl+click to open a new tab in FireFox ;)
  6. Is it possible to make the window in the Edit Post dialog wider? Presently most common links will warp, length-wise :(
  7. Please turn off the bold font in "quote"... IMO it would actually be nicer to make the quote's font size small "size=9".
  8. Any chance of prefix/postfix Post information making a comeback? E.g. to set the color of your posts automatically? Just noted phpBB will *not* allow wapping with color tags, i.e. any /color will turn off the color... drat.
Suggestions
  1. Prohibit graphics footers (banners) - normal 1 line text footers are fine, IMO.

These gfx footers are really annoying to have to read past. Nobody needs an ego boost like that, *NOBODY*!
AEon: Making this a Sticky for now... will unsticky it in a week or so.

I agree, the signature graphics are lame and would probably be best to elminate if possible.

Signature graphics can be cool, but I understand if they are disallowed, but shouldn't the height dimension be 480 and not 400? Would be weird dimensions on the images if they're 640*400.

My bad, for a moment there I had forgotten what the US resolution to 640x is... come to think of it if we include the European resolution it would be: 640x512... (my desktop is 1280x1024 and not 1280x960 e.g.)

Lol... my Avatar is now Immortal ;)

There's no such thing as 640x512 ?
Not on my desktop atleast.

True, try Photoshop though... 1280x1024, scaled down proportional to 640x, bingo.

Lies, if you have scale lock on, if you type width as 640, it automaticlly chooses height as 480. :p

EDIT: I mean constrain proportions

Neither for mine, 1280x1024 is not european resolution AFAIK, and the ratio anomaly only seems to be there for 1280x1024, but the scale is actually wrong when running 1280x1024, run 1280*960 to be proper.

1600/1200 = ~1.33
640/480 = ~1.33
800/600 = ~1.33

1280/1024 = 1.25

I would advise you change to 1600x1200 like me, or turn to 1280*960, I have no idea why many games let you choose x1024 but not x960.

(seems LCD's are dimensioned a bit different than CRT's, so 1280*1024 resolution is standard for LCD's or flat screens.)

I'm in two minds about bringing [lvlshot] back as I think it makes people lazy and generally not think about the file size of images posted to the forums, which is the real killer esp. in the WIP threads.

Maybe there's a way to resample the images rather than just resizing them?

True, but we know how things go, the leet folks will abide to 640x, realizing larger images are not going to make their map better (sarcasm there ;))...

To put it into the words of KotOR-Speak, [lvlshot] is LEM's [Force Persuade] for Moderators to ensure the threads stay readable. IMO too wide threads are very annoying *and* hard to read.

I have no idea how much hacking this will involve though (in HTML its a trivial "width=640")

But the real issue as you pointed out, was not only the too large images, but the way beyond call, far too huge image file sizes.
Maybe there's a way to resample the images rather than just resizing them?
Auto icon generation, in 320x or smaller would be neat... but would require Q3W to cache the files. Come to think of it that would help keep threads readable, even *after* the original image link died.

I like how this time around if you refresh on any page it won't take you back to the main forum page.

By the way, when is someone going to update the main news page? Skyroads, huh?

Here's a request... Can I get my old profile back? It won't send me an e-mail with a new password.

Nothing happening much her? In my KotOR II absense as it seems?

Or have everything already been fixed and added since?

I dont mean do devide something here, but there is nothing called European and American Resolution. The 640x480 is the correct, the 1280x1024 is correct for a flat 5x4 screen, not a 4x3 screen, because then it would be 1280x960. People uses 1280x1024 on 4x3 screens because it feels better.

This is also why games like Half-Life from the begining didn't support resolutions över 1280x960.
