I just got back from a 7 day western caribbean cruise. Didnt get to stop in Grand Cayman(bad weather) but Cozumel was nice, we just hung out at the beach, and shopped. Also went to the eastern caribbean last year. I liked the eastern more. Just leave all your troubles at home, and just sit back and relax. There is no better vacation than a cruise. My 2 cents. Have fun, and take lots o pictures.

Working on a cruise lines is ok, not bad. You get to save lots of money, because there are no on board expenses, other then laundry and alcohol. Plus you get to visit lots of exotic ports of call. But the down side is that you don't have to many exiting jobs to chose from, you work 7 days a week 8 hours each, and the biggest is the fact that you cant mingle with the passengers. When you are off duty you are completely separate from the passengers, and no access to passenger areas for you.

I don't know how DRuM did it for 6 years, thats to much. However the standard contract is for you to work on board at 6 months at a time, so that whole 6 months you are on the ocean. Its fun. If you live outside of the US, you get payed tax free when working on cruise ships. The average pay is between $1,000 to $1,800 per month, more after working the first 6 months. Tax free plus 6 months, plus no expenses for 6 months, thats a lot of money saved.

No times that I can remember, I was rather busy playing west side story in the theatre, amongst other shows.

Well you got some points right, but lemme pick you up on the above. Oh it's easy doing it for 6 years. Working on a cruise line is ok, not bad huh? Lemme see now.. sun, girls, money, great food, playing music for a living, own cabin with en suite shower room, toilet and satellite tv, and as you said, exotic countries. Including complete world cruises. I could go on. We had the full run of the ship, mixing with passengers, hence, plenty of shagging. Lol no, nothing like 8 hours a day. Try one hour in the afternoon rehearsal, and 2 x 1 hour shows at night. Different show everyday. And lol again at 6 month contracts. I was there as long as I wanted and I never stayed on the ship for more than 2 or 3 months at a time, I took paid breaks whenever I wanted. I'd say that was quite a bit more than 'ok'. Please get back to me when you know a little more about the leisure business or better still, when you've actually worked on a luxury cruise ship. Being a barman or cook doesn't count, they don't get musicians priviledges :olo:

If you are into excursions, try stingray city at Grand Cayman. The water around the sandbar is a beautiful, crystal clear, blue.
I 2nd this recommendation. One of the coolest things I've done. Swimming in the open ocean a few feet above a stingray with a 7 foot wingspan was awesome.
If this is your first cruise, a word of advice. Don't try to do everything. Pick at most 1 excursion per port.

i'd second that. only been on very short cruises and on the few excursions we did, the reps were keen to give everyone a good day out and send them back to the boat knackered and ready for an afternoon basking by the pool.

by the way, for anyone else looking at coast-hugging cruises as an alternative to land/air transport, don't bother. being trapped in a big steel box with the worst characters hunter s thompson ever dreamt up just isn't worth it, no matter how drunk you are.

This seems like a pretty good opportunity to throw food at doombrain. Food that he paid for.

These stingrays are VERY used to people. They are in the wild, but they come from all around when they hear the propellers of the boats. I've got pictures of my wife and myself holding a "baby" stingray.

Minor change (mistake) in plans....

Let me start by saying that the wife planned this entire trip. :clownboat:

So we start out the day by getting on the road at 7:00am. The trip to the port of Miami only took a little over 2 hours, thanks to the Nuvi 350. Minus a few wrong turns (because the roads are stacked on top of each other) we pull up to the to the port, but we can't seem to find our ship. Can't find a cruise ship you ask. How do you miss one of the worlds largest cruise ships? That's what I was wondering until I asked one of the security guards and was told it doesn't arrive until tomorrow. DOH! We then check our boarding passes and sure enough, the cruise doesn't leave until 11/25/07. The wife has obviously driven us to Miami a day early... :dork:

Again, thanks to the Nuvi we were able to find a Courtyard Marriot in down town Miami close to the port. We booked a room, but check in wasn't until 3:00pm. So back to the Nuvi. What do we do until 3:00pm? Miami Seaquarium.....

The Seaquarium was pretty cool, but it's a little dated and needs a make over. But we were able to see several shows envolving different types of sea life and entertian oursleves for a few hours.

We're now at the hotel relaxing a bit before we go out for dinner. Guess what, the hotel has wifi.
The good thing is we can sleep in tomorrow. :D

I remember when I was visiting Europe a few years ago and arriving at the Airport one day early, when it was time to go back to Canada, due to the confusion on the time zones and the time printed on the ticket.... sucked bad.
