Weird Noises and Funky Colors

Post by Silicone_Milk »

So what do you guys think of this?

I move my computer and the PSU starts making a noise like a VCR player locking up. I shut down my computer immediately and try to get it to stop making the noise.

I end up punching the PSU and the noise stopped and it runs smooth as butter.

I look at my monitor and it said Windows failed to start properly. No big deal.

Well, I have Windows running now and what do I see?

As you can see, the colors on the left side of the screen are gray at the top then green near the bottom while the far right of the screen is the normal color.

I'm running:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2 NVIDIA 7600 GT SLi
ASUS M2N4-SLI motherboard

I'm thinking one of my videocards got messed up but I'd like to hear the opinion of somebody who knows something about computers before I'm convinced all is lost and I must shell out yet more money on a new videocard.

try this first.

go to my computer, right click the hdd your OS is on. select properties/tools/error checking. check the top box(auto fix disk errors)and click ok. it will ask to schedule a check next boot. restart.

that noise was probably a fan on the psu rubbing the housing.

thanks for the quick reply. It seems to be my monitor from what I can see because the screenshot is normal when its on the right side of my monitor.

Ill go give the error checking a shot though.

Thanks again.

I just stared at that screenshot with my head pressed to my screen for a few minutes trying to see the gray and green. :offended:

Dam that's 800x600. It looks tiny on mine screen. Are you blind or something?

I actually run a resolution of 1026 x 768.

It's just a preference I've had for years for some reason.

Have you tried degaussing your monitor?

and to elaborate, you may have a magentic or electric feild interfering with your monitor where you've moved it to. Turn off fans, lights, etc, see if it changes. Move the monitor around, sometimes just turning it a little is enough to get rid of it.

there should be an option to degauss in the menu somewhere, if not just a button on the front. you may have to do this repeatedly while you search for the problem, sometimes the effects of magents "stick" on the screen and won't go away even if you remove the problem, until you've degaussed.

You're right. I can't see it either, just an extremely cluttered desktop full of useless icons that shouldn't be there.

Perhaps the regulated voltage levels are fluxuating and causing random errors for some of the supplied components.

Thanks Creep that did the trick.

Canidae, those icons are there for a reason. They may seem useless to you but there is a reason that they're there.

Quick launch or several other programs could clean that up and they would still be easy to get to.

Actually the reason is that I have a thing about organized areas. I have to have a cluttered environment to be able to function normally.

You have two choices with the PSU,

one: blow apart the psu, and put some fine lube ( really light gear oil, watch oil, etc ) in the Fan and spin it for a wie and re-install it.

2nd: replace it.
