Re: catch me if you can
In week seven of 1823 we finally exited the jungle and entered the plains. It was good to be able to see more than 5 meters in every direction again and every member of our party felt rightly invigorated. We sent scouts in every direction to find the prized beast that was the goal of our mission, the mysterious bird that grows more than five meter in length if eye witness accounts are to be believed. The rest of us remained in the camp, keeping ourselves busy with maintenance of our wagons and the treatment of our feverish jungle infections.
By the time morning came, one of the scouts had failed to return. Suspicions of desertion were duly raised by my colleagues but I dismissed them angrily. Dare I say, dear reader, that I knew the man in question as a noble spirit, even in spite of his racial handicap? I might. In any case I must confess I held great hope that he would indeed return. I expected he would enlighten us as to the reason of his tardiness without lie, and with a bit of luck, the very reason for his failure to return had everything to do with the objective of our mission. I felt it was prudent to grant the man another 24 hours before attributing his sudden disappearance to wildlife or savages.
