Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Recently I passed my driving test, it took me two tests to pass; on the second I passed with only two minors which I was pretty happy about.
But im just curious, do any of you openly admit to picking up bad habits over the years since you passed your test? Throughout my lessons and generally walking around in town I've noticed minor but very annoying things that people do, namely failure to indicate, which i find extremely frustrating at roundabouts.
However I think my Dad is right when he told me that now I've passed my test, I'm now leaning how to drive.

Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
People who drive like they did on their examen are a menace to society.
Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Real men ride motorcycles.
Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.
Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
The first thing you'll forget is not crossing your arms when you turn the wheel.
The second thing you'll forget is to keep strictly under the speed limit.
Outside of that everything else should stay.

Actually I think I drive much better than I did when I passed (with 3 minors, in-case you wanted to know), my car control is definitely better, but that's probably down to driving bendy rural roads most days.
I can't think of any bad habits I've picked up, other than getting annoyed at people who do 40mph on 60mph roads which I drive every day and know like the back of my hand and know are good for 70mph.

I rarely ever have two hands on the wheel. My left hand does all the workFoo wrote:The first thing you'll forget is not crossing your arms when you turn the wheel.

speed limit? what?
Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
It's not so much bad habbits as experience.
Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
I hate when people drive like maniacs on the interstate... that pisses me off more than people turning extremely slow.
Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Ever notice how those same drivers carry on doing 40 through the 30 which is the one zone where you really should stick to the limit?PhoeniX wrote:I can't think of any bad habits I've picked up, other than getting annoyed at people who do 40mph on 60mph roads which I drive every day and know like the back of my hand and know are good for 70mph.
They have like a single fixed speed on their car or summat.
Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Heh yeah, I never get why they do that. I usually find they lose me in the 30 then I catch them up again in the 60.
Whilst we're on the subjects, has anyone (from the UK) considered doing the IAM test - http://www.iam.org.uk/? I know it won't make much of a difference to my insurance but I'm tempted to do it for the experience.

you'll drop some habbits and learn new ones as you drive more. things you do will piss others off no matter what so i never worry about it.

The only thing I do different is using one hand rather than the "10 and 2" crap. I find it kind uncomfortable to have both hands on the wheel all the time. If it's pissing rain and I'm flying down the freeway and I can't see shit then usually I'll have two hands just cuz I think you have better control is something goes awry, but 9 times outta 10 I just steer with my left hand or put my hands in my lap and use my thumb to keep the wheel straight
Yeah, failing to indicate is fuckin' annoying, I always give people a wide berth so in case they pull a fast one, they aren't gunna fuck me up. And if I ever see anyone swerving around like they're drunk or they are doing anything suspicious I ease up on the gas and give em a bit more room.

yeah that happened to me a few days ago on the highway, I was driving through the tennesee mountains and had the cruise control set at 70. Through the turns, i had to dodge people to get around them, then on the straights they'd blow by me. Then i would pass them in the turn again. stupid people can't pick a speed.
The worst is when someone is coming up behind me and they wait until they are inches from my bumper to switch lanes and pass (when i'm in the righthand lane). JUST SWITCH LANES FURTHER BACK SO YOU DON'T FUCKNG BLIND ME WITH YOUR LIGHTS KTHX
I've got another long drive on new years and anyone that rides my tail is getting a laser in the face. I'll have my green laser and I plan on shooting it into the rear view mirror. that should get the message across.

Ive been wanting to get flood lights installed in the back window of my car for people like that.
Some cock got mad i passed him one night so he rode my ass with his 900 lights on behind me. So i pulled over and did the same to him for 30 miles.

Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Not indicating direction and going to slow is what I'm annoyed at in other people. As for bad habits, I tend to take corners too fast for any passengers in the cars. Don't consider 1 handed driving that bad seeing I switch to both hands when needed in a pinch.
Only 2 days ago i went 160 km/h in a car that's 4 years older then me. Felt strange in the right rear wheel and I don't think I'll go that overboard again. Long live Germany and it's non existing speed limit though.

I laugh at dickgobblers that think I have the high beams on on the R1 all the time. They flash their lights at me in righteous indignation, then I turn my high beams on and flash-fry their eyeballs.

Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
Since I got my license I've learned to drive stick, really well, and I've also gotten into racing. I've taught myself rev matching, heel and toe, how to counter steer properly, proper throttle control, and the late apex which is essential in a rear wheel drive car.
I somehow have yet to pick up a single ticket to this day, and I'm not sure why. Maybe its because I don't drive fast on the highway unless someone annoys me by driving too slow.

I was in the left lane of a 3 lane highway and this ass was riding my tail but I couldn't go any faster because there were people in front of me ( i keep my distance though), so he flies over to the righthand lane, blows by someone in the middle lane (passed him on the right, i've gotten a ticket for that before) and was going to try and cut me off so i goosed it a little and he got stuck behind a truck lol
what an asshat.... PWNED

Re: Do you still drive like you did on your test?
And, no way would I drive like I did during my test, for the most part it goes:
30 zone = 40mph
40 zone = 50mph
50 zone = 60-70... maybe a bit more
60 zone = similar actually...
National limit = 80 to 100
Unless the limit really is appropriate, or there's a camera.
That aside I cross my arms a bit more, albeit it not a lot, I still always indicate, because I want to punch people who are too fucking lazy to move their hand a nanometre to let people know where they're going.

that and tailgaters that don't know the road are my main bugbear, almost the opposite of what pho described - people that sit on your bumper as if you could be going faster than 60/65mph on a wet and winding A road - then when you let them overtake, you realise that you were the only thing guiding them and they don't actually know the fucking road at all, so they slow down below 60 and pussy out to 40odd on every corner.
started going to the IAM a while back to play on their skid pan. a lot of the stuff you have to do with them is boring as hell (the worst is describing everything as you drive), but it definitely improves your driving.
