Anyone been to the Bahamas?

Post by blowsy »

Planning my summer '08 holiday there.

In a perfect world we'd stay in the Atlantis Resort but (due to cost) we would prefer to stay in a nearby resort somewhere that has affiliations with Atlantis and let's you use the facilities there.

We want the usual sun/sand etc during the day but also bars/nightclubs/casinos in the evening.

Any advice?

I've been twice, once before Atlantis was finished and once after. The 2nd time we stayed at Beaches all inclusive. I'm unaware if any other resorts have affiliations with Atlantis and let you use their facilities.

Spent a day in Nassau on a cruise, went to Paradise Island and all that. Stay away from the packaged trips they offer, rent scooters or something and see the place. There are some gorgeous mansions along the coast that are worth seeing. Just don't agree to go with anyone into an alley to buy weed. :olo:

I've been once and stayed at Port Lucaya. It was really nice. Not as many people as Atlantis.

I'm also a certified SCUBA diver and made a few dives while I was there. The shark dive was amazing. I'd recommend it if you're into that sort of thing.

Funny you should say that. A friend and I were walking through the markets when a strung out bahamian with a lazy eye came up to us and said "Ganja for green!" We got the hell outa there to say the least...

We did a "swim" w/ reef sharks. They are scavengers, not predators. Still dangerous, though. I took a few pictures with a crappy disposable underwater camera, but none of them came out. I was so fucking mad about that. I have one or two from the surface, though.

That sounds awesome. I got about 5 feet from a nurse shark in the V.I. but that picture came out crap too.

I've loved sharks since I was a kid, I'm fascinated by them.

The dream trip I'm working towards is a safari and shark diving trip to S. Africa that includes cage-diving with great whites. As long as I do that before I die, I'll be happy.

I had a couple people ask me in passing in the parking lot near the ship, I didn't even respond. I know people that have been dumb enough to do it and they were lucky to get away only losing cash. :dork:

A woman I work with took a trip to the Galapagos this year. Something crazy like 4 full tank dives a day. She almost got "run over" by a whale shark and they were supposed to swim with hammerheads, which school by the hundreds, but I'm not sure if that worked out or not. Not having done either, I'd have to say that swimming w/ hundreds of hammerheads in open water would have to trump being in a cage near a great white.

I'd love to see some hammerhead sharks. Like R00k, I've always had a childhood fascination with marine life in general.

As for tropical destinations, I've only heard great things about Cuba. Makes me want to go badly :)

Big schools of hammerheads would be very, very cool. Still, there's something to be said about the awe of being inches from something as big and ferocious as a great white.

I'd love to do both.

A whale shark would be an amazing sight too - probably cooler than most whales.

I think they called them silver tip sharks. They were big. Some over 10 foot long. Plus I was 60 feet down and they were all around you. We saw one that had a hook stuck in his mouth with a piece of fishing line that was about 20 foot long attached to it. My guide grabbed that line and started jerking on the mother fucker. The shark started shaking his mouth and gettin pissed. Kinda scared me for a bit...

I guess not everyone is lucky enough to have the great barrier reef off their coastline.
Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.
