It's worth noticing that the Nikon D40 and D40x lack the auto-focus motor inside the body of the camera, which severely limits the possibility to buy third-party optics, since Sigma and Tamron only makes a few lenses with auto-focus motor built-in.

If you want full compatibility, then get the Nikon D80 (which is coincidentially also a better camera)...
