Upconverting DVD players

Post by tnf »

I'd never buy a DVD player for this advertised feature (1080i upconversion!, etc..) but does a DVD player that does upconversion really produce a picture much better than one that doesn't on a standard definition DVD? Does the whole process of upconversion just involve some image processing algorithm or something?

I need a new player and won't be buying an HD or Blu-Ray player anytime soon (watching 1-2 DVDs a month plus whatever BBC series my wife got from netflix that she watches isn't worth it.)

On a SD TV, useless, on a HD TV, often better off leaving it to the TV to scale it (as it would do anyway).

There have been plenty of discussions on this on AV nerd forums and opinions varies though.

Also, nearly all DVDs prohibit upscaling over component. You have to use HDMI to upscale.
home burned disks will upscale :paranoid:

I've seen a mix of some movies looking much better than others. The Matrix looks average, but newer movies, especially animated films, look amazing in comparison.

My 360 upscaled over VGA, pretty sure it did with component too. Its obviously does it with HDMI.

My PS3 is a different beast, it looks a tad worse than the 360 does when upscaling (at least to me, more blocky?), but BluRay is stunning.

^^ maybe it is a regional restriction, then.
I doubt it, though. You're probably a moran.

Lies. You don't need the HD-DVD drive, just the latest firmware and a HD set :p

They are more than that - but the issue is HD-DVD movie availability. Places around here don't rent many of them, just sell them. And I will not buy movies. That would be like flushing money down the toilet considering my movie-watching habits.

I have said buy it for its upscaling capablities not the movie availbilities.

You asked about upscaling i have given you answer purely on what i have experienced. The HD DVD player has to be able to decode HD DVD's at 24fps in most cases so it sstandes to reason that they can upscale normal DVD's better than normal upscaling DVD players??

get meh? :D

No, I get it. At first, I thought you were joking about HD players playing HD videos in full HD resolution and thus 'upscaling' (sarcastically meaning playing in full HD) better. Didn't even think about the native upscaling features for SD DVDs that an HD player would have.

Get it? :D

Well, both Curcuit City and Best Buy are selling them for 149.99. But Circuit City is giving you 7 HD Movies (2 in box and 5 by mail) and Best Buy is only Giving you 2.

I think I'm going to go to Circuit City today and get one.

Hey TNF, wanna buy my DVD player? :olo:

Oh, the only thing about the Toshiba HD DVD players is they take an age to start up. Its like waiting for a PC to boot :(

You're about to watch a 2 hour movie... What's so bad about a 30 - 40 sec. boot up?

BTW, I just secured mine on the internet for in store pick-up. I'll be back in a bit. :D

Go get the newest firmware. It cuts the boot time in about half.

I was never planning on getting an HD player, and still am not planning on it, because I"m not really worried about upconverting other than being curious about how well it works. Even though they are only $150 or whatever. I'll spend 50 bucks or whatever on an SD player when I'm out next. I know audio and videophiles won't understand my ambivalence towards HD movies but I'd rather spend the other 100 bucks on something else at this point.
