Upconverting DVD players

The HD DVD drive for the 360 can upconvert and although I don't have anything to compare it to, it seems to do an incredible job. Newer, high-end DVDs look nearly as nice as an ok HD DVD.

I was never planning on getting an HD player, and still am not planning on it, because I"m not really worried about upconverting other than being curious about how well it works. Even though they are only $150 or whatever. I'll spend 50 bucks or whatever on an SD player when I'm out next. I know audio and videophiles won't understand my ambivalence towards HD movies but I'd rather spend the other 100 bucks on something else at this point.

Heh, my personal rule of expensive AV equipment is that, by the time you can afford it, the presbyacusis has set in and you can't really appreciate it anyway

For the next year or so, the benefits of DVDs for compatibility, backing up, ability for one's mother to understand the format etc. still far outweigh eg. being able to see the individual pores in Gandalf's nutsack as he teabags Frodo.

most dvd's look better, but i never said as good as a hi def dvd, so not sure where you're going with this.

i sayd from what ive seen, upconverting sd dvd useing a player , usually, to my eyes anyways, introduces way way more artifacts

I don't know, really. I hooked it up, tested to make sure it worked and turned it off. I still haven't done the firmware update either.

I'll spend some time with it this weekend and check back.

on some, yep. the faroujda dcdi does better than alot of others, although i don't use it for every dvd.
