Static or Dynamic?

Well I got a letter from my ISP saying that they are planning on switching to dynamic IPs for all customers. Up until now everyone has had a static IP. In this letter they said that if I called I could keep my static IP. Now if they say it will cost extra, or keep me from getting a speed boost after they hopefully up me to 3MBps (I can dream) then I will go with dynamic; but if the price and speed are the same should I keep my static IP or should I go with a dynamic IP?

My modem, a VisionNet, is hooked into my router and my X-Box and 4 computers are on the router and I play online games frequently; if this helps any on what better suits me.

i've always liked my static (although my isp says we're all dynamic). i've had the same ip for almost 3 years. just easier for me to remember when i need to do stuff remotely or snag a shoutcast stream. other than some goofball stuff like that, i don't see much of a benefit.

Unless you're running an email, web, or game server a static IP isn't required persay. If the cost is the same keep it for sure though in case you want to run a server in the future.

switch to dynamic, the lease time is usually ~3-4 months or each time your modem gets unplugged and pluged back in..

if you are trying to run shit, take a look at http://www.dyndns.org and reg a dynamic domain name ( for free ) and run an updater program in the background.

keep the static if its the same price.
if its not, you don't really need one, why pay for it.

Well I called and they said it would be $8.50 to keep static, so I'm getting dynamic IP now. Since my modem is connected to my router do I need to change anything?

on a less related subject, anyone know if the transparent green VisionNet modem, model 200ES, is a good modem?

edit: nevermind, looked in my router management tool and found a nice clickable button to change from static to dynamic, so much easier then the hoops they made me jump through to set it up

nope. unless they force it, you won't get another ip until you power down your modem. at that point it's wise to reboot your router.

That isn't always true. The major DSL ISP where I'm from has low DHCP lease lifetimes. This means that there is a good chance of a person getting a different IP when that lease runs up. Something to be aware of anyways.

As for the cost difference I'd say $8.50 a month is well worth it for a static address. My cable ISP wants 3 times the monthly dynamic price for a static IP :icon8:

Kills, ever think about switching over from whatever it is now (Skybest maybe?) to Bellsouth. For ~$50 a month, I get 3 megs down/384 up, static IP, and a free backup dailup account for those times when you're away from home or the DSL goes out(the latter has never happened yet in the 2 years+ I've had it)

Well I have some really bad water with BellSouth, but I went to their site and I cannot get their DSL without also having one of their phone plans and having a dynamic IP does not seem drastic enough to change all of that. As for the speed, I would enjoy the uped speed, but the way the letter SkyBest sent was worded it sounded like they are planning some major upgrades soon

that's interesting as i'm supposed to have a dynamic ip also, but have kept the same IP for a couple of years through my isp. some friends have the same "problem". i don't wish to bring it up to the provider because i don't want them to take that away from me.

I hear ya. My cable provider rarely forces a change either and I'm happy with it that way.
