Quake 3 steam activation

Is there anyway that I can enable Quake 3 on my steam account since I physically own the game and have a cd key? Or does steam suck that much?

I've never used it myself, but there is a section to add non-steam games to your list. Not really sure what all that entails though. Couple questions. Have you tried? And really, why would you need to if you have the game and key? Just curious.

You can add the shortcut, but you can't register your CD-Key against steam.

If you add the shortcut, your Steam friends will see you playing Quake 3 Arena.
