Downloading and Playing Speeds

My computer runs at 130 Mbps. When I get into Quake 3, and try to download a map from a server it downloads at a rate of 1 to 2 Mbps. I ever got the rate of under 500 bytes per second!! Why does it do that? How can I fix it? I'm not too good on downloading the right files from anywhere else, and putting them into the right folders. I've tried it, but I'm not really sure what I'm doing yet. Back in the day, when I played quake 2.. I had a 56k connection with an old 98 computer and THAT downloaded faster than I do now playing q3. Can someone please help me out? I'd really appreciate it.

Downloading directly from a Q3 server will always be slow because it caps you at sv_maxrate (# of bytes it'll send you each second, usually 25000). Pro tip: go to http://lvlworld.com/ and download the map from there.
