Should I go to a doctor?
Should I go to a doctor?
So this is kinda weird, but I wanted to get a general opinion, so where better to do this than the Quake3World Forums
I am 37 years old and the last time I ever got sick was like 6 years ago when I got one of those "Flu shots" and never did that shit again. Before that, the last time I got any kind of cold was when I was in my senior year of High School.
2 weeks ago, I started feeling a cold come on. I thought I could fight it, but lost. I had a sore throat, cough, congestion, and all the other common cold symptoms. One week into the cold (last Monday) I was awakened in the middle of the night with a bad ear ache. Felt like someone poured hot oil in my ear while I was asleep. Well, I am no longer sick and all of my symptoms are gone, but I have never regained hearing in my ear and it has a constant "ringing" making me miserable.
Was this ear issue related to the cold or is there something more serious going on here? Should I see a Doctor (never been to a doctor or in the hospital for anything because I am healthy as an Ox) or maybe just wait this out and see what happens?
If I hold my hand over the good ear, I hear absolutely nothing. This shit is driving me crazy.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Yes you should go to the doctor you fucking dolt. Sounds like you got a nasty ear infection and you could be looking at permanent hearing damage if you let it go unchecked.
Re: Should I go to a doctor?
If you have to ask.
Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Yep, ear infection. And, yep, I'd go see the doctor.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
I have an old prescription of penicillin in my medicine cabinet. Maybe those will fight the infection? I am sorry, but I am not one to go to a doctor and cry about shit. I do have medical insurance and shit, but never use it. Maybe it's time?
I don't need some doctor telling me something I don't want to hear (even if I have a hard time hearing it) because I feel I am stronger than a stupid "ear infection". I hate taking pills.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
I'm the same way. Quit spewing out testosterone and go see the doc.
Re: Should I go to a doctor?
I can't wait till you try to be stronger than a heart attack.
Re: Should I go to a doctor?
You'd rather risk permanent hearing damage, if it hasn't already occurred, than look "weak"?
Surreal.
Surreal.
Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Just walk it off.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
dont take old meds, especially ones that are 6yrs old.
Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Old meds is usually worse than no meds. Seriously, see a doctor if you want to hear out of that ear. Ear infections without treatment can result in permanent hearing loss.
Of course, everyone above said that already, so I don't know what you're still waiting for.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
No sympathy if you don't see the doctor and you lose your hearing

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Don't see the doctor. If you go to the doctor, you will stop being so manly and you will no longer be able to brag that you have never been to one. You're much better off using drugs that you don't quite understand, that should clear you right up.

Like the others have said though, get it checked.
I'm the same way as you and Scourge both, but feeling a little sick from a cold and going deaf... there has got to be a line drawn somewhere.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Do you/did you see any redness or swelling on the outside part of the ear?
If not,
You probably have an ear infection called otitis media. This type of ear infection is often associated with nasal congestion, diminished hearing, feeling unwell, and fever.
With infections of the ear canal, also called swimmer's ear, gently tugging on the ear lobe causes pain, but nasal congestion and cold symptoms are less likely to occur
You seriously need to go and see your doctor, to get some medicine, or you might loose your hearing permenantly.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
I haven't been to a doctor in 11 years, but if I woke up one morning and couldn't hear out of one ear, you bet your ass I'd go. ffs

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Well, I finally broke down and tried to contact a doctor that accepts my Medical Insurance. What a stupid game the Medical profession is! Out of about 40 doctors I spoke to that accept the plan, more than half are not accepting new patients. I finally got an appointment for next week at a facility 50 miles from home.
I am going to try this over the counter crap that a doctor recommended and hopefully it works and I can cancel the appointment.
I bet if I was on fucking Welfare and had a runny nose, I would be able to get immediate attention and a free ambulance ride.

Re: Should I go to a doctor?
Doctors are like that everywhere. That's why it pays to have a regular/family doctor, so you have somebody you can see when you need to. In addition to the obvious reasons, like you know, making sure you don't have prostate cancer.Mulletman wrote:Well, I finally broke down and tried to contact a doctor that accepts my Medical Insurance.
