If you guys vignet your pictures, do you use some kind of natural vignetting technique or do while postprocessing in RAW?

The 5D does it naturally, but I also use ACR in PS to add some if I want to.

I took a trip up to the lake district yesterday with a friend. We were sposed to climb the biggest mountain in England (which is more like a hill when compared to the rest of the world) in nothing more than trainers and jeans. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Anyway, we drove up for 3.5 hours, got lost about 10 miles and finally found the place at about 1:30pm. The roads are so crazy up there that I was sick as soon as we got out of the car. This didn't bother me though, so we get out and find the nearest thing that looks like a path to start our journey proper. The ground was quite moist but manageable. About 2 minutes in, we noticed the ground getting much softer until finally we made one step too far and started to sink. It turned out the ground was some sort of horse shit/soil hybrid and before we knew it, we were knee deep in the shit. I try to pull myself out and my trainer gets stuck in the shit and comes off my foot. I'm now standing in shit in my socks and had to pull my trainer out with my hands. I almost went face-first into it, but thankfully the gods took pity on my city boy ignorance and we managed to pull ourselves out. Needless to say, it wasn't a pretty sight, but thankfully we found a freshwater stream nearby to clean ourselves off. I threw my socks away, doused my trainers under the stream for about 10 minutes and tried to get rid of as much shit which was stuck to me as humanly possible.

In total, our actual walk/climb lasted 15 minutes and totaled about 100 yards. We got back in the car, lost as much shit clothing as possible and set back off. The car absolutely stunk and I was sick a total of 3 times on the journey home. We laughed about it as much as one could laugh and joked that if we got pulled over by the police in minimal clothing and a car smelling of shit, there would be difficultly explaining what happened without them thinking we were a bunch of homos. But still, it was fun in a sadistic sort of way. Needless to say, next time I think we will bring the proper equiptment.

Oh and some pictures before we got the mountain proper (as you can see, it wasn't the best of days with light rain most of the time:

I'm liking that first one, FX. I assume it's digital, but it has a very nice print film-like color and contrast quality

With winters long haul among us, with all the snow, sleet and frozen ice that has fallen this year, which makes global warming a joke, I long to see sites like this again.

So of late, being kind of house bound, due to the cold temperatures we are experiencing. Due to the snow, the sleet and the ice that seems to settle on my windshield when I go to leave the house, even if its forty degrees outside. Due to the clouds, the gloom of day and the loss of sun. Due to the darkness that is there when I wake up and is there when I get home........

I was left with a longing. A longing of warmer times, of better days of warmer temperatures. Clear sky's, sunny days, insects buzzing around, even tho I hate them when they do.

So I dug into my archive of photos to cheer myself up on a cold winter night. A time that was warmer. A time that was new. A time that everything seemed to be in love with everything. A peaceful harmony of light, love, color and nature.

I present to you an unreleased photo from last summer. A time when it was hot. The bugs were flying about, crickets sung in the night. Air conditioners were on to cool us off and drowning out the sounds of the cicada. A more tranquil time.

A time of kids as they squealed when they flopped into a pool. The sound of firecrackers and beer tops popping. A time of laziness, due to the heat. Back porch grass watchers. Sounds of mowing. The smell of fresh cut grass.

A time when the breeze would blow, but not enough to cool you down, but enough to make you wish it would blow just one more time, as you set your beer down.

A time when you would look longingly at the sky, seeing a cloud upon the horizon and wishing it would cool you down.

A time when you looked at nothing, yet was satisfied to do so, as you, also, did nothing, in that tranquil state, of comfort.

Yes, I know it came out bad...digital cameras and I don't get along. No film in the Minolta.

FX, you're pretty rad. I remember you talking about how you were into, or just getting into photog a few years ago on a q3 server. Your shit's pretty amazing.

I was this close to selling my D200 today, and getting an EOS 1N-RS or F3/4/or 5. I'm really not liking the lens selection for digital. Not to mention it's 1.5:1. I thought I would be able to cope but I miss fast lenses and film. Maybe I should have gone Canon.

If you go Canon, get the 1V. I had one for a time and I sort of regret selling it. I traded it for a Zeiss rangefinder because of the size, but i still loved the camera.

I think you could have done your "test" with 100% crops a whole lot easier than what you are trying to impress us with. After all, those that have DSLR's know the full file size is gonna be 8 to 12 megs. You seem to have a joy with posting either a tiny image, or going full sized file. Neither which impress me. (Not to mention you have yet to post anything that is interesting.

And as far as Mint and Free? I call bullshit.

Take a real pic and lets see what that Sigma 70-200 can do. And please, include the EXIF data, even if you do do some post processing.

Love the second pic Dave.

Example from with EXIF data included.

While not 100% crop Doombrain, I am trying to show you that you can compress an image to a point to just before it degrades.

Show us how that Sigma preforms.

Do you guys just go out and about the town looking for stuff to shoot or are you out doing other things and just have the cameras with you and snap things that look interesting?

May 2002 was when I started tuning into photography after acquiring the Canon G2. I thought it was the shitz back then...40,000+ frames later and it's still taking the same quality pics. It is the shitz! Except too bad the rear LCD cracked in half 8 months ago.

What lenses do you have? Good condition F100 going for $250 these days. Get a 85mm F1.4 with it instead of dumping money on a 1V or F5.
