Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
Very good news, means physics will start to get integrated and the whole 'gaming card' thing will start to develop. It was never going to get very far as a discrete card.
AMD are doing almost exactly the same thing with Havoc.
The problem with be with having seperate implementations. Whereas cards developed from the standards of OpenGL and DirectX, physics is going to be coming from 2 different codebases in Havoc and PhysX...

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
indeed, they need to work togeather and get a standard built ( just like openGL and D3D ) Else, this is going to be shit.
All of the Nvidia based games will run like ass on a ati canrd, and vice versa..
the really sad thing about this is, most of the big titles out there are Nvidia based.. so ati is gonna take a blow with this one :S

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
I'm thinking in 10 years time we'll see standardised game AI hardware too, and integration of sound onto the board as well.

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
10 years? i think that is a little much, if we where talking about.. ohhh say mid 90's i would agree with you.
but with the HTPC thing ( finally ) Catching on in a big way, and the introduction of HDMI cards and junk, i think it wont be that long untill Creative starts getting togeather with Nvidia/Ati to make a all-in-one silution ( 1080P + 7.1 Audo
)
getting back to the PPU's, i've allways felt this was the point of the PPU. to come out, grab some attention and get baught out.. i just didnt think it would take this damned long.
So your timeframe may be right, but i would be more inclined to cut it in half.
Developers are going to get sick of it and just Not use Eater sides Software so they are friendly to each on the user's end.
OR! some of them may find a way to make it work with both, and that would rectify the situation.
ahhh, who knows... only time will tell

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
the real question is does it support the "old" 8800GTS's
they dont specify on the site between them.

they dont specify on the site between them.
Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
might be ok for games with spare gpu power. but hows it going to help in say crysis where you're already begging for more rendering power?
they need to slap a hardware physics chip onto the pcb.

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
..Then you'd just pay more for that.
It doesn't matter where the processing comes from, but it'll make it cheaper to do it on the same processor as the graphics.
And there's no such thing as spare GPU power if you've got an uncapped framerate. The GPU pumps out the max frames per second it can manage up to 100% of its ability.
If you're running Q3 and take com_maxfps off, you'll max out the capacity of an 8800 just as you would with a Geforce 2, the difference is the 8800 will put out way more frames each second.

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
This is probably the first iteration. You may see dedicated chips or multicore GPUs in the future.
A unified codebase would be nice. Having to code and test a game for both systems while maintaining consistency is going to be such a pain. Imagine playing a physics dependent multiplayer game where some people have PhysX and others have Havoc cards and the way objects react differs depending on the card.

this is where microsoft could step. having it be part of directx.obsidian wrote:This is probably the first iteration. You may see dedicated chips or multicore GPUs in the future.

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
i agree shadd, it could be.
But the main thing is simple, would the Respective owners of the technoligy hand it over to Microwank to do the work?
i agree, it should be uniform and work both ways ( as i stated on my last post ) but, its going to be one of those things that will be SO hard to make happen because it didnt start off that way.
it will be interesting, through i see alot of the Gamer Developers eather takign sides or trying to get there game to use both for a wile before anything serious happends..

Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
I finally upgraded to an 8800GT so this was nice to read. Thanks SoM.
Re: GeForce 8 to gain PhysX support
Havoc was aquired by Intel for pure IP. Intel will not make anything of it, just use parts of its IP in future instruction sets for their CPUs.
GPUs are very powerful and at any point of time there are parts of them not used and thats where PhysX IP will come in.
