According to the BBC the two boys at the centre of this were already pretty fucked up, one was laughing and joking with his mother whilst he was being interviewed about the incident; it was said a couple of times that they didn't understand the severity of their attacks - not sure how you'd not know that stomping on someones head wasn't serious.
