CoD 4 english language pack

I bought the game off of Steam when I was still in Berlin. After my download I started her up only to get the german version. So...after getting internet here in Montreal I nuked the local content and redownloaded it thinking I'd download the english version (I also set the language for the game to english as the download started).

Nope. I only have the "german" folder in my \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty 4\zone\ folder. To "reset" the download/installer I then switched the language to the german language (just to switch it back to english). Steam started downloading a ton of data and my "german" folder has a lot more data in it. Then I switched the language back to english and Steam started downloading another ton of data...but no "english" folder in the \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty 4\zone\ folder. The "german" folder just got alot bigger (the "german" folder was only 585 MB before I switched the language and now that folder is 2 GB)

If anyone has the PC version installed (english version) could you please let me know which files should be in the \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty 4\zone\english folder? Perhaps Steam fucked up in the installation of these files? Or...better yet, could someone make available their english language folder for me to grab from an FTP or some shit?

I've paid for the game. I have no DVD to grab the english language pack from. I've followed all the instructions from the Steam and Infinity Ward forums to get the english version working but no joy. The forums don't really offer any other fix for this and it seems like actually talking to someone at Steam/Valve or Infinity Ward is akin to publishing a picture of the prophet Mohammad. This is not a request for warez or anything like that, I'm simply asking for some files for a broken game that Steam can't fix.

I don't have a Steam version of COD4. I bought the English DVD and I don't have a "common" folder in the SteamApps folder. However, I do have an English folder in Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\zone\. It's 2.20 GB.

Steam doesn't give you a CD key, does it? If it did, you could just torrent the game and use the legal key.

I'm assuming any cd key info is automagically installed through Steam. Steam usually is pretty good at sorting shit out and it automatically updates itself to keep in top shape. I'm really wondering why these fixes don't work (they're more like workarounds than fixes). Another fix that I haven't tried yet is to set Steam itself as another language and then reseting it back to english (which will trigger every game to download the language packs (if needed) but I don't want to install anther 50 GB of shit I don't really need). Besides...what if that doesn't fix it and now all my games are in german?

I'm actually torrenting the game right now just to grab the zone files from the Virtual disk (if I can even access those files). Here's hoping.

Gramps, if you can throw it up somewhere that'd be awesome.

That's fucking weird.

Just for kicks I launched the game (after two HUGE updates and the game set to english) and it's still in german. Then I set the launch options to german (just to set it back to english) and it again starts downloading a ton of shit.

But...the weird thing is that my zone/german folder is back down to 155 MB. And it's downloading another shitload of data while it "updates" the game and re-grabs all the shit it removed.

WTF?

I've never R/S'd anything before, so getting this file up is new to me. Turns out .rar'ing it was stupid, because for some reason R/S didn't like the file. So now I'm U/Ling the multiple files inside the english folder. It's not going so quick either. But I'll PM the link when it's done.

If I were you I'd do a massive uninstall of COD 4, including all reg entries. Then reinstall with new settings. It sounds like your steam folder is completely fucked.

The U/L continues.

Actually I did completely reinstall Steam and the game on a whole new install of XP on a new computer (thanks Air France for trashing my system). I'm guessing perhaps my Steam login info probably has it set to german so the Steam servers simply threw me that version again. Oh well.

Have you tried changing the region of the steam account. I think that is possible.

I'll let BitComet finish up and check it again tomorrow after work.

I haven't found any region settings in steam, only language under the Interface tab. If all else fails I'll set Steam to german then back to english...but I'm hoping it doesn't fuck my other games and force a huge download (Steam updates any game it can in its list with the new language when you switch it).

It's not possible that the German and international releases of CoD4 are considered different games by Steam, is it?
I know the Germans have very strict censorship regulations when it comes to war games, so is it possible that you're falling foul of some agreement between Valve and the official German censorship regulator?

I got em all and installed. The game bitched at me when I added the english folder and removed the german folder. I simply renamed the english folder to german and it didn't crash. I had an error with one of the files after finishing the training stage but just redownloaded it and it worked.

I just played it up to the first sniping stage and the audio of the game is strangely still in german, at least the subtitles are in english so I know what's going on. Hell...even the registry keys show the game set to english.

I've also found the following in a config file in my profile:

seta loc_forceEnglish "0"
seta loc_language "2"

I've set both to "1" but the game is still in german. After playing the game resets the seta loc_language back to "2". I then added both the german and english folders to the zone folder, started it up, it's in german and the game still resets seta loc_language back to "2".

Oh well...like I said, at least now I can play.

So far it's pretty decent. The intro/interactive cutscene/credits was nicely done and I like how your squadmates both wait for you and guide you.

I'm just saying that the game focuses nicely on the player's actions with the guys not going through doors until you get there. All the "moments" aren't missed.
