Cover Songs
Cover Songs
First link is the original artist:
Hurt
Johnny Cash
NIN
Whiskey in the Jar (Someone before Thin Lizzy made this song iirc, just can't find who)
Thin Lizzy
MetallicA
Simple Man
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Shinedown
Just wondering, these are the first songs I could think of that were created and then covered by a well known group. Every cover I can think of doesn't do the song justice...
Got a cover better than the original?

"Whiskey in the Jar" has been around for centuries and recorded by dozens of modern bands.

Re: Cover Songs
I remembered a few over the course of today.
Nearly all of Marilyn Manson's hits, including:
Tainted Love
Sweet Dreams
Personal Jesus
Taking a slightly dark song and making it a bit darker seems to be a formula that works for him.
DMB is famous for finishing their live shows with "All Along the Watchtower."
Everybody loves to hate Korn, but I kinda like their version of "Another Brick in the Wall." They combine all three parts in to one full song.
Again, everybody loves to hate emo, but MCR's and The Used's version of "Under Pressure" is pretty damn good, IMO. They do a good job on vocals and the double drums sound really good.
Godsmack recently released a cover of "Good Times, Bad Times." They started as an Alice in Chains cover band and probably should have just stayed that way. Their version contributes nothing to the original.
Speaking of NIN, AFI covered "Head Like a Hole." Seems like another classic better left alone to me.
edit:
Here's an interesting list:
http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/b ... songs.html
I had no idea Clapton's "Cocaine" was a cover.
Other good ones (IMO):
Oh yeah, RHCP's "Higher Ground." That version kicks the ass of the original.
NIN doing Queen's "Get Down Make Love."
edit2: here's another list.

I can't say I knew some of the famous versions were actually covers.

chopov: With all due respect...and I'm not sayin that wasn't any good, cause it was fairly good...it doesn't even come close to Stevie Ray Vaughns.
Fender: You've got good taste. Some remakes surprised me as well. It's a kick in the ass when you run across a remake of a remake.

I'm far from saying that SRV's version isn't good. For my taste it's just too near at the original (or is it just SRV's crocodile dundee hat, which I don't likePeenyuh wrote:chopov: With all due respect...and I'm not sayin that wasn't any good, cause it was fairly good...it doesn't even come close to Stevie Ray Vaughns.

Re: Cover Songs
I'm a HUGE Iced Earth fan. They came out with an album called "Tribute to the Gods" in 2002 (I think).
Track listing:
Creatures of the Night
The Number of the Beast
Highway to Hell
Burnin' For You
God of Thunder
Screaming for Vengeance
Dead Babies
Cities on Flame
It's A Long Way to the Top
Black Sabbath
Hallowed be Thy Name
