WRT54G-EU

Post by Survivor »

This is the little router they have near me for a small price (€40). Currently I'm only running a single pc directly linked to the modem and there are no real plans on going beyond 2 in the near future. The gaming pc will be in the current location and as such directly linked to the router. The second pc should be upstairs and will probably use the wireless. Now some research shows there are quite a lot of versions of this router. Is the one I mentioned appropriate for how I want to use it? Is there a version available for a little more money providing a lot more functionality?

There's quite a lot of versions because some versions of the WRT54 have embedded Linux which can be modded freely.

There's a wiki for them somewhere, a quick google should bring it up. If you have one of the moddable versions you can add a ton of stuff you probably don't need :D

But for what you're proposing, the router in its current form will be able to handle that...

in the states, the model is WRT54GL which designates linux based firmware as opposed to VxWorks.

Pretty much any wireless G router will work fine for what you want it to do, but if you wanted something a little more elaborate, you can upgrade your firmware to a 3rd party one for more advanced features.

The most popular firmware is DD-WRT but it only works with very specific models and revisions of routers as Foo said above.

IIRC the older WRT54G's worked with DD-WRT, but newer ones have less memory to flash it with so they are not easily supported (there is a 'lite' version of DD-WRT for some of those other routers). The newer routers that retains the larger memory are designated as WRT54GL (as Juggs pointed out).

Whatever the case, make sure you double check your router's revision number and check to see if its supported by the firmware and follow the instructions exactly to prevent problems.

The largest problem I have with getting wireless set up is the fact that Windows Wireless Zero Configuration sucks ass in so many ways. It does a great job of connecting to a basic wireless connection, but at other times it just completely gets in the way of what you want to do. Playing games over wireless, for example, it does a broadcast scan every minute so you get this complete lag once a minute. Disable that sucker and see if you can get a third party software instead (the wireless network monitor that comes with the Linksys wireless cards works great if you happen to have a Linksys wireless PCI card).
