The last movie you saw
Re: The last movie you saw
Saw Iron Man last night, had to sit in the very front row because they were the only two seats next to each other left. Really fun movie, I would see it again. My girlfriend made the observation it was a lot like transformers, but then again she didn't understand any of the dialogue.

rofl. no thanks. 99% of the films mentioned in that fandango article sound like complete shit.

Speed Racer - 5 / 10
Story was retarded as hell. The only thing that kept me awake was the constant bombardment of over-stimulating special effects (which, by the way, made the movie for me)
The special effects, while used WAY too much throughout the movie and even brought about a headache, were actually really neat to see.
I dont think there was a single moment throughout the whole movie where the camera was still and 90% of the movie the camera was constantly zooming in and out.
Save your money if you havent seen this one. Wait for it to hit bargin bins for a couple bucks.

It was shit if you had read the book. Not just shitty in that "oh, that never happened in the book", crappy adaptation way, but in a "man this is a colossally shitty excuse for a movie" way.EtUL wrote:
You have to take this as an action movie. As an action movie it's great, as a thriller its mediocre.
Fucking great action movie I think.

Vexille.
Quality 3D animation with topnotch cellshaded and motion captured characters.
Great attention to detail.
But while visually stunning the story didn't draw me in.

Green Street Hooligans - 7/10
Some wonderfully brutal fights. Fairly predictable, but still worthwhile.
Zodiac - 7.5/10
The length and pacing would have put me off if I didn't love this kind of based-on-a-true-story investigative stuff.
I've also watched the first 3 episodes of Dexter. What an interesting and original television show. It's pretty creepy and kind of uncomfortable at moments, but the atmosphere and his character are great. I love watching the black guy who's a caricature of the by-the-gut, reactionary, over the top cop. The girl who plays Dexter's sister does get on my nerves a little though.
Got This Is England too, which is waiting to be watched next. I'm getting my $s worth out of this NetFlix account.

It really is a great show. Just saw ep 4, Doakes isn't so bad after all.
Re: The last movie you saw
iron man - 9/10 - imo, best comic book adaptation made so far aside from Batman Begins (which was so awesome it's not even a fair comparison). didn't overreach, just told the origins story. as a "film" i'm sure it was lacking, but as a film adaptation of the first 5 issues of a comic it was gold. good action, seamless fx, perfect casting, good beer at the drafthouse.
and dexter's sister damn near ruined that show for me. made me wanna chokeabitch.

Inside Man 8/10 Denzel Washington and Clive Owen were both excellent in this movie. Its one of the better bank heist flicks I've seen so far.

so basically Harvey Dent becomes Two Face Mid way through the movie and is not Batman's Enemy but Jokers'. The Joker causes Harveys' scars. Harvey uses all of his political power to try and destroy The Joker but in Doing so he starts to Destroy Gotham itself. Batman and The Joker actually Ally temporarily to try and bring Two Face down because to the Joker he is a threat as he is to Gotham itself. Batman needs to stop him because he is essentially declaring Martial Law on Gotham and oppressing innocent people in his effort to stop The Joker. Batman has a serious struggle with himself trying to decide who is right and what he should do. Deciding if he is a hero of a renegade Vigilante as Two Face essentially becomes. Batman does finally decide to accept Jokers temporary alliance and they try to kill Harvey Dent. Two Face sets explosives in buildings hoping to blow up a building while the Joker is in it regardless of what innocent people may be in the building. Two Face employs military and police forces to stop Joker by any means, Joker employs a small army of criminals to support him in his campaign against Two Face. The Joker ends up on the top floor of a building fighting Batman and Two Face as "All Bets Are Off" after The Joker tries to pull a fast one on Batman when his guard was seemingly down. Batman subdues Two Face with his ascension gun. The Joker is near the window of the building when Two Face manages to pull out a gun and in blind rage he shoots The Joker in the chest and he falls through the window in an Homage to the first Batman movie.

Zombie Strippers 9/10
Grave-risen gutter sluts.
If you're not sold by the title alone, Robert Englund plays the strip club owner.
Poultrygeist
Ok, I'm not even gonna rate this. Troma films are the best. Gorgeous cinematography, profound and inspiring dialogue. I laughed, I cried. A timeless classic.
If you only see one film this year, see Poultrygeist (even though it came out over a year ago)

Indy 4.
I'm not going to rate it, because it would be impossible if not controversial. (That's not to say it's a bad movie, it's actually pretty good.)
First and foremost, it's no Last Crusade. There. Obviously noone was expecting that, but we were all hoping it.
Premise is about the same: Indy teaches, he gets sent a letter with gibberish by an old friend. Deciphers the letter, finds out friend disappeared, picks up where said friend left off. Halfway through the movie we get to meet the friend - an older, cooky archeologist who got in too deep. Together they solve the mysteries and find a legendary temple while battling men with guns. Temple starts to shake and collapses, taking all it's secrets with it. Replacing 'letter' with 'diary' and 'friend' with 'father' should make this a familiar story.
When they made this movie, 'subtlety' was not in their vocabulary. When the gang gets confronted with a riddle the audience gets beat over the head with the answer over and over. It makes you wonder what makes Indy such a good archeologist if you, the viewer, gets the riddle 2 minutes before he does.
Also, references to previous adventures and characters are (deservedly) made, but again so blatant that it actually gets in the way of the movie. Example (without spoiling much): the movie starts out with the KGB infiltrating a large warehouse filled with crates. The keen observer and Indy fan would immediately recognize this as the warehouse where the Ark was stored at the end of Raiders. This should have been enough, but instead amok is being made and at the end of the scene a crate breaks open and the Ark falls out.. in the foreground of the shot.. along with an ominous score. This actually made me think the Ark would have a key role in the movie. It doesn't.
Oh, and a nuclear bomb? lol. no sir, subtlety does not apply here.
I want to paraphrase Ahnold's character in Commando here for a bit. Remember when George Lucas said they would only use CGI unless asbolutely neccesary? He lied.
That is, unless they were able to get 3 million Siafu ants, trained a tribe of monkeys to swing through the jungle alongside Shia LaBeouf, and invented a brand new Matrixesque way of filming highspeed chases.
Speaking of Shia. This guy sucked in Transformers. He was one of the elements that made the Transformers movie be about the worst movie ever.
Here he actually upstages Karen Allen. He does a good job in portraying the rebellious teen of the 50s ('Mutt'), who is able to learn the lessons of life without laying it on too thick. He even provides us with some chuckles.
Karen Allen gets shoved into the background and is there more as a service to the fans than anything else. She's also not how you remember her. She went from the hardassed Mistress in Distress to a Cookie-baking Housewife. "I'm your God damned partner" made way for "Golly, he's so dreamy". The chemistry between her and Indy just isn't there. They bicker once, Indy whips out the smooth moves and she's in heaven. And that's that.
Still, this movie is very enjoyable. We get treated to some oldschool dungeon crawling, an awesome chase through the Amazone Jungle, and just enough lighthearted moments that make you chuckle. The focus lies more on Shia looking up to Indy than actual Indyness, which is fun for a change. You get to see how people around Indy experience his antics, e.g. disappearing in the back of a truck during a chase ("What's he doing now?", Mutt asks. "No idea, he never plans ahead that much", Marion responds) and coming out at the other end with an RPG.
Again, I enjoyed this movie a lot and will probably get it on DVD or BluRay in due time, even though it is a bit too two-dimensional - Indy recieves Mutt's unconditional respect in about 5 minutes.
last and also least: HUGE SPOILER HERE!!!11!!!!!!11!! it all went to shit when they went all XFiles on us. i could almost hear Scully say "i believe, now". i choose to ignore this sequence THIS IS THE END OF THE SPOILER!!1eleven!!1

Re: The last movie you saw
If you're an adult and you were expecting a grown-up version, I would agree. However, I took my 8-year old and 16-year old kids to see it and they thought it was great. This actually was the first film my 8-year old sat through without appearing to be bored. I think the critics are overlooking the target market for this one. Here is an alternative review:Silicone_Milk wrote:Speed Racer - 5 / 10

If you are taking your kids, I would recommend seeing it in theaters. I don't think the amusement park ride nature of the film will come through as well on the small screen.

Fantastic. Great acting by all the major players. Ending was a little anticlimactic. Too many very intentional product placements annoyed the hell out of me.

Indy 4 - 6/10
** SPOILER ALERT **
i'd rate this higher than temple of doom but lower than raiders or last crusade. enjoyable, but imho one outing too many for the franchise, and not one that will shine on cate blanchett's CV either. actually the biggest laugh was when marion told indy that mutt was his son, and someone in the audience sarcastically yelled out "No!"
good, but it just wasn't the same without john rhys-davies, nazis and of course the great denholm elliott

Tropa de Elite
Impressive.
For those who saw Cidade de Deus, it deals with the same subject matter (gangs and police corruption in Rio de Janeiro), only this time from the POV of an elite police squad, in particular its captain and two new recruits.

some of the action was worth it, but to put it lightly if I was told that it was directed by the guy that did "spy kids" I wouldn't be surprised. He probably wrote the script too.

The action was over the top and cheesy in a way that was reminiscient of the first 3 and it had quite a few laughs. I liked the way any use of CGI was very understated. Its a worthy addition to the series IMO.
