I have tried loads of stuff but it just will not connect...

the reason he asks is because MS decided to ban people off Live whenever their time/date is set incorrectly

anyways, it seems to fail at resolving the dns. must be your router or isp being a dick.

Open with Notepad: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Add these 2 lines to the bottom:

65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
