I never bought COD4 and now I'm wishing I had. I hate buying games after they've been out for several months...

You're not too late. It's the only game that's held my interest that's been released in the past hmm, what, five years? I think part of that is it still feels a little like quake3 under all the spangle, it just feels smooth in its movements:>, I don't know how developers manage to do it, but in almost every other game it's as if you're running through invisible custard.
