No video in quake3.

Post by c0ld »

I gave my friend my old computer to use and we tried putting quake3 on there. Problem is the video is screwed up. When it starts it flashes once then just goes black, we can hear the audio and the game is running fine. Doing a vid restart makes the screen flash once while restarting it. I can't figure out what the problem is on this.
I used to play quake3 on it in the past and although it couldn't cap 125fps on full graphics it did play the game fine.
It is a:
1.6Ghz p4
256MBSD ram
integrated graphics card
and some HD. heh
A humble machine by todays standards.

We didn't do a complete HDD wipe down, he merely deleted many of the old programs I had on there, games/misc music stuff. And I highly highly doubt he would touch any thing graphics card/driver related. So I'm stumped. By all meens it should play q3 as it did before.

Could you post a console dump and the q3config.cfg?

The game will shutdown if the gfx card/driver aren't functioning at all.

I'd bet on resolution/refresh settings within q3. Remove any configs and try again.

No, I remember the first computer I installed Q3 on, it would start up the same way but you couldn't see anything on screen. It was because it didn't have a supported video card.

You may be right, but in most cases the game shuts down if there's no openGL capability.

If the game is running and there's no picture, it's more likely the problem is at the monitor.

Creep:
if the game cant find OpenGL the "Console" will be up with a flashing OpenGL Error Flashing in Grey and Red.

if the game starts and there is no picture, thats usually the refreshrate being out of it.. in that case deleting and starting over with the CFG will Re-set it and get it working again ( assuming the monitor can do 640X480@60hz )

The computer has played quake3 before, infact that was the computer I used when I had the time to really get into q3 so it can't simply be the card being able to do it.
I don't have the PC with me now, but when we installed it the q3config should have been default.
I'll give it a try and if doesn't work out I'll have him come up with the condump to show you guys.(I'm getting ready to go out of town).
Thanks.

make sure r_mode isnt "-1" with a widescreen res, it probably isn't it but whenever I tried to use it on a pc that wasn't widescreen or a monitor it would do the exact same thing you describe
