To anyone in a position of authority

Post by Jackal »

Have you become disgusted with people? I am continually astounded on a day to day basis with just how petty, childish, and stupid some people can be. Some of the employees I have to deal with here are worse behaved than my pre-teen little cousins and will accept no responsibility for anything they do unless they're receiving praise for it.

I am floored by how often people will knowingly do something wrong and then later, when you confront them about it, claim that they "didn't know" despite the fact that you've talked about it before on many occassions. Also, oftentimes I find people come to me with questions that they already know the answer to in hopes that I will bend the rules for them or perhaps hope that I've forgotten what I've previously said and give them some sort of carte blanche to do whatever they want.

Then these same people have the nerve to get pissy when you won't bend the rules for them because it "makes their life harder". Tough shit. Every time I bend the rules it makes MY job that much harder.

Honestly, as I get older I'm becoming more and more disgusted with the maturity level of supposed "adults" when it comes to the work place. What ever happened to professionalism? Is it that hard to act like a normal person between 9-5 Mon-Fri?

Funny you should bring this up. There's a chap in IT who's just been pulled into HR for shouting and joking around and i've got to do a sit down with one of my team because he's having a 'point scoring exercise' with another employee and acting like a fucking ten year old in front of corporate clients. BTW he's in his 40's.
I'm going to throw the book at him because for some amazing reason he seems to thing the company will fold if he leaves. He also smashed he car up a few months back and blamed the service people at Ford. We asked for the forecourt video tapes and sure enough in the video the idiot backing the offside rear wing into a lamppost.

My position is not so much one of authority but one of centrality in the organisation and yeah, i kinda agree.

Some people are fucking disgusting, especially the ones that make a hobby of doing as little work as possible, delegating everything they can get away with to their colleagues. I have no patience with these people. There's also the kind that systematically refuses to take responsibility for their actions using a wide array of excuses, these are also very annoying.

Things rapidly become ten times worse when such a person hold a position of influence, which is something that can really be killing for a small business. Especially here in euroland, where it's relatively hard to fire someone. Seen it happen, not pretty.

I'm all for making sure that people who work together can get along with as little annoying things as possible and - more importantly - get the job done, but I also feel that teh professionalism has made some sterile personalities. I'd rather work with someone who has a sense of humour than someone who's all business.

If I have annoying co-workers who are total children I simply turn up the volume on my MP3 player.

its not just a thing about being in authority or people in a work environment. people in general can be quite disgusting and idiotic.

riding the subway regularly, you can notice how nasty a large number of people are. people are slobs and just litter and junk stuff up. crowds of people reveal a great deal of idiocy of the common man. driving shows how many people are idiots. people are sloppy. this is probably somehow related to how many people are taken by the republican party and fox news.

I couldn't agree more.

I've honestly come to think, between my own experience and what my fiance tells me about her employees where she's worked, that roughly 80% of the working population aren't capable of functioning in a professional environment of any kind.

When you're responsible for other people you don't have that option.

Yesterday as I was pulling out of a parking space, a guy was driving directly towards me so i hit the horn, he swerves, and as I'm yelling out my window for him to keep his eyes on the fucking road, his head drops straight down at his phone so he can continue typing his text message.

I've said it a million times... texting while driving is a LOT more dangerous than talking and driving. It's way easier to speak and drive and look at the road, than it is to spell and drive and look at teeny tiny letters. This is all way off topic, but i wanted to rant.

But on topic, being in a position of authority in the military is so much harder... yeah you can order people what to do, but when they realize that no matter what they do they will still get paid, it damn near takes an acot of holy proportions to get them back in line! glad i'm done with that shit.

I am responsible for other people. You deal with staff when it's needed and hopefully they get the point. But it's never healthy for anyone to continually harp on someone for bad habits. Any boss that quickly bitches about everything as it happens doesn't get any respect from their subordinates and lowers morale.

Besides...if you're the boss and you can't work with someone, fire them or have them transfered off your team. You don't have to suffer if you don't want to.

A serious question to those who bitch or don't like "unprofessional behavior"....have any of you studied anthropology or psychology? If you did, you'd probably already know that humans are - at their core - party animals and don't always take well to stringent working conditions. And yes, "professionalism" sometimes has to be learned.

We're a pretty close knit team of about 20 people, all of which are very professional and mature. Fuck, you'd never get a job here if you weren't.

I can see that in larger workplaces with less qualified people, there would tend to be the occational retard though.

Regarding the general population, yes a lot of them are fucking annoying idiots. You see it every time you go to a bar or any large public space.

I have a degree in anthropology and I think your assessment is a bit off. What you say may apply to westernized people but it certainly wouldn't speak towards what people are like at their core. Our society has spoiled a large percent of the population to a point of no return.

And the reason I threw "authority" into the mix was because the other half of the time when these people aren't crying like children is spent with them posturing to look like consumate professionals in front of the higher-ups. This just makes me hate people that much more.

I wish I could just turn my music up and drown out everybody but unfortunately that would mean that I'm not doing my job. Judging by how fucking petty these people can be, as soon as I try to ignore them they'll probably go cry to the CEO. That in turn will cause me to have to first have a conversation with the CEO explaining why said people are retarded and then for us both to talk to the person to either A) straighten them out or B) fire them. I'd rather spend that time doing my job.
