UT3 on the 360

Post by tnf »

Before anything else, let me get it out of the way for you who can't handle people playing games on anything but a PC -

"lol consoles"
"lol fps on consoles"
"lol fps with gamepads"
yaddda yadda yadda.

I'm out of PC gaming until I rebuild and right now I've got money going in too many other directions to do that to play just a few games.

How does this game handle the balance of fast-paced FPS with the limitations inherent to the gamepad? Worth picking up or renting?

As far as I've heard, UT3 has more or less been a failure on all platforms.

Ok, maybe failure was a bit harsh.

"Haven't met up with the expectations" perhaps is better?

Basically: "Meh"

It's too glitzy and you can't see what you're doing. Movement feels horribly slow and the maps way too big for the speed you move.

...sums up the hour I gave it.

UT = great

UTx = too fast = too acrobatic = too annoying for any platform, but it is pretty to look at

I had to force myself to play it because I actually used money on a pc game. Its boring. The maps are huge, and I get demolished everytime. Not by real skill, but from.. I dont know.. huge ass vehicles and clustering in general.

There aren't enough good maps for UTx. The gameplay mechanics are much better than UT's noobish spamfest, but in 2k4, there's only one map people play DM, and it's Rankin. Nobody plays Onslaught or any other game mode, but if they did it would be Torlan. I bought the game because I saw it had like 4000+ players all the time, then I found out all the players were bots. Fucking owned.

ONS had a great following in the UK for about a year after 2004 launched... participated in a few ladder tourneys myself. Dunno if that's all died off now, shame if it has. Many of the stock maps worked out really well for competition with a few exceptions (Arctic and Torlan have weak spots with default links).

DM was always underrated, especially 1v1, yet there was some great maps in the launch version and a few map packs that worked really well.

I don't get why it never took off. The same game under an id software badge would have had people jizzing their pants.

spammy weapons, floaty movement, shitty art style etc etc

thinking that an id logo on the game would make any difference is pretty stupid IMO

Rented it today for no other reason than I felt like some fast paced deathmatch on the 360 - crappy or not. Graphics were fine, I was able to handle the movement with the gamepad fairly well even in the fast paced parts...BUT...every fucking game I was on had such bad lag for me there was a half second or more delay between pulling the trigger and shooting.
