ANNOUNCEMENT: Quake Live Invites

Post by obsidian »

Since I know many of you don't visit General Discussions, I thought I'd let you guys know that there is an invite thread to the beta for Quake Live. Anyone interested in getting an early start into playing it should check it out. The only rule is that by signing up you MUST use at least 3/5 of your invites for other Q3W members. Batches of invites are being released really slowly, once every few weeks, so don't expect to get one right away.

The game plays for free right in the browser with a plugin, much like installing the Flash plugin so you can play Flash games in the browser, except Quake Live is in full 3D and looks exactly like Quake III Arena (with a few graphical/gameplay improvements) and you can play full screen. Worldwide office productivity levels are about to hit an all time low.

>:D

If you didn't need that ActiveX-stuff (which is often blocked in companies) to play, you could most likely figure out the release date of Quake Zero by looking at the Dow Jones...

I thought I was supposed to send you one. Who'd you poke/bribe to get one? :D

If anyone's looking for a small private match, let me know. I realize that I'm still only a relatively intermediate Quake 3 player and should really stick to mapping. I own at ETQW, though.

Certain individuals shall remain nameless ;) I don't know, I just got a mail from id HQ that didn't have any names attached to it; I'm guessing it would say who sent the invite?

I had a friend of mine send you an invitation. May take some time though as obsidian said.

Just be patient. :sly:

Ok, invite sent for st3ady. People can post here, I choose to give my invites to the mappers rather than the general discussion.

You need to give your first and last names as well as your rough skill level for the sign up info.

Excuse me but is there any info on h/w requirement?
I bet it's most likely to be very demanding.

Requirements are pretty much the same as Q3A (though I think a broadband connection is a must).

hmm, I must have something screwed in my config... 90% of the time I hitting the 125 mark in live, I've never once had a problem in q3 with it. I can easily play d3, q4, and mario just fine though, and never had a problem with the original q3 as I said. I'm still guessing it's plugin related honestly (I haven't tried anything but the latest FF release), and reading through some threads on the live forum it appears that at least one plugin does cause problems, but whatever, I normally miss the platform to rail jump anyway.

Sorry ... removed this comment just in case...

My biggest personal question about Quake Live however is not how it will run but rather....
Can I make a map for it?

According to a recent interview:
As far as content goes, it really is something that I want to bring in as we go forward, and as the product gets successful. My personal feeling is that it will come in more like user-generated content comes into, say, current social website communities. An idea would be like: we make our SDK available, we run a level design contest, a certain period of time passes, we take those levels, weed out the ones that basically aren't up to some level of quality, and then we put those up on the game, and they go out to everybody. So that again, we don't get that fractured community, where this person is running this mod, this person is running this map, and when you connect to the server it doesn't know that you have it--which is kind of the current state of the original Quake III.
Interesting
I suppose I might want to get my act together and start thinking about putting together a modern day Quake 3 level lol.

If I recall Ydnar added some really insane stuff for levels back in the day that were far ahead of the times. Things like 1 to 1 ratio light map density being projected on to normal mapped textures was pretty damn crazy stuff. Not nearly as intimidating these days in light of something like a mega texture or endless streams of 2048x2048 textures as observed in Gears of war and UT3.

Hell I imagine these days you could pull off .5 density light maps and .125 standard density textures if you really wanted to push things. But I mean.. ouch.. lol.. better not be a huge terrain map hehe...

Another thing I think would be low hanging fruit for Id to consider would be getting some decent post processing effects working too. You can make a fairly old game look amazing with some good post processing effects.

Should this post have been its own topic? lol sorry XD.
This Quake live thing has me interested in quake 3 again.

No, posting here is fine since the main sign-up thread is in GD. I've been doing some speculation myself. Just keep in mind that if you are already in the beta, you can't talk about what you see in the game itself.

Castle: it would be very interesting to see someone really explore what q3map2 can do. Post some pics if you get the urge to play around with those ideas.
