I thought the email would just return to the sender and it would say that the email address was invalid.

Since that's apparently not the case, I edited my message to make sure people understand it:

Yes, you said yourself your email is getting spammed. If you are already on all the spam lists it miight not affect you. Do you see?

Edit: Not to mention Google's cache which could also be trawled, even after you remove or edit your post. (A Google bot is known to visit here.)
