nVidia self-ownage
nVidia self-ownage
All nVidia G84 and G86 parts are bad. No exceptions.
Looks like nVidia just screwed themselves hard. A huge chunk of their laptop parts (which also includes a large number of macbooks) are defective. They're stonewalling most press right now.
Should be interesting to watch.

Holy crap!
According to Google that's 'G84' - the 8600s - and 'G86' - the 8500.
I have a 8400M on my laptop, sure hope it isn't affected. I've always been a nVidia guy, perhaps not so mutch now.

Re: nVidia self-ownage
My G80 powered 8800 GTS has been pretty flaky since day1... so i'm really not surprised.
Re: nVidia self-ownage
Except that the 8800 doesn't use those chipsets? Wondering if it's really as bad as they're saying it is.

I was suggesting that I'm not surprised since I feel the build quality of even supposedly non defective products is iffy.
Re: nVidia self-ownage
Still doesn't take away that it's only the G84 and G86 :s.
Edit: ah, well I've never had any real trouble with nvidia beyond some driver fuckups.

Re: nVidia self-ownage
The more I read about the nVidia lately, the happier I am I went with the 4870, especially when you consider the price of it vs. the 280 and even the 260.
Re: nVidia self-ownage
i went with the 260, mainly because i need it to work in Linux, and i'm not yet ready to trust ATI on that. i've been using nVidia parts in linux since the TNT2 with no problems whatsoever.tnf wrote:The more I read about the nVidia lately, the happier I am I went with the 4870, especially when you consider the price of it vs. the 280 and even the 260.
the latest catalyst linux driver release notes don't even mention 4850/70 support, and the radeonhd (open source) driver is a joke for actual use. i didn't have much of a choice. it sucks, because the 4870 looks like the better part.
Re: nVidia self-ownage
lol, laptops. this is nVidia's way of saying "get a real man's desktop PC you big girly poser you"
and make sure its beige, with none of that LED shit on it

this is no big deal for me, I mean come on peeps one fuck up(granted big one) and all those years of solid products comes into question? give'em a break... honestly, their credibility didn't even get a dent in my eyes, I'm sure they'll do good by this and handle the situation like professionals
Re: nVidia self-ownage
The Inquirer is hardly a reputable news source, as creep pointed out. They tend to be a megaphone belching sensationalist tabloid. They won't be hurt too badly by this in the long run.

Re: nVidia self-ownage
Didn't nVidia also get sued by Microsoft last year because something like 80% of reported Windows errors were caused by the nVidia drivers?
I've always ran nVidia on PC, but my last really good value card was the 6800. The 7900s I had always felt flakey, and my 8800, while reliable, doesn't seem like a massive step ahead of the 7900 performance-wise.
I'm even contemplating moving to ATI with my next upgrade...

Re: nVidia self-ownage
I don't think they got sued, but MS released the statistics of the causes for crashes, which nVidia topped by quite some margain.
Well I had a 2900XT before, which caused endless problems (incompatibility with my TV-card, with Windows Media Center, performance issues, idled at 70+ degrees, sounded like leaf blower etc. etc.), but since I got my 8800GTS 512 I haven't had a single problem - it's super quiet and super fast.
No performance leap between 7900 and 8800? What? Maybe your bottleneck is somewhere else?

Re: nVidia self-ownage
Wasn't a huge leap, but I was running 2x 7900GTOs in SLI as opposed to just running 1x 8800GT.
Anyway, I didn't say "no preformance leap", I said "not a massive step ahead".
It is slightly faster, and is definitely more reliable, just more an incremental upgrade.

Re: nVidia self-ownage
well if I was comparing a previous gen SLI setup to a current gen single card I wouldn't expect any massive steps ahead either
usually 2x last gen top cards = 1 current gen top card
usually 2x last gen top cards = 1 current gen top card
Re: nVidia self-ownage
i have pretty much the opposite scenario as grudge.
my last nvidia card was a Ti4600, then I rocked a 9800pro with absolutely no issues (matter of fact its still running in my lady's machine). That was replaced with an 8800GTS, which has had many random crashes. After much investigation it seems that large quantities of people with my card + vista bitch on the net about the same problems. So basically, Nvidia has yet to write a vista driver for the GTS that is worth a shit.
I might switch to one of the newer cards if I can find one that my water block will fit on. Nvidia seems to optimize drivers for the newer cards not really caring if they shit on the older ones... had the same sort of deal with nv drivers when i had my first card of theirs (GeForce DDR). As the newer cards got into swing i had to stop upgrading my drivers since newer ones were always randomly unstable.

Re: nVidia self-ownage
IMO the 8800 gts is a pretty good, and quiet, card. I use XP, though.

Re: nVidia self-ownage
i agree, i've had my 8800 GTS for around two years now, and other then its insane Temps, its a great card.
Re: nVidia self-ownage
yeah I also have a 8800gt it's solid, and fairly quiet...don't they regulate fan speed according to workload? if you're gaming who cares about the added dB's, it works very well.
