strange problem

Post by vileliquid1026 »

This just started happening a little while ago:

Anything that I try to copy (high light and copy I mean: like pictures or text) wherever I try to paste what I've copied, I get an asterix. Anyone else ever have this problem?

This guy?

Or do you mean asterisk as in "*"? :p

And what do you mean you get an asterisk? The file name changes to an asterisk or you get an error message with an asterisk in it? Windows? XP or Vista?

Anyway, you might want to start with some virus scans since that simply doesn't sound like a normal error. Especially if it's a file name change, an asterisk is not a valid character for Windows file names.

Make sure all your default fonts are still there and check to make sure that the OS is using the right ones. It may be substituting them for some reason to another font or something.

First off, I'd stake money that you're using Vista.

There's a few things that you can try. You're not the only person to have seen this problem but I don't think it's common.

- Get all the latest patches for the OS via windows update and see if it goes away
- Update your browser (I'm guessing it only happens in your browser)
- Reset the UAC notifications in vista and try disabling it
- Give us a list of all the programs you have installed (especially utilities and things that run on startup) and we might be able to find the culprit.

I've seen clipboard issues on some tools that support clipboard sharing (RDP, VNC etc) where you'd end up with another remote client's clipboard and they end up with yours. May be similar.

well you owe me some money because i'm not using vista ;) (gimme a little credit here, Foo!)

I used Obsidians picture as an example. If I right click and select copy (or highlight>edit>copy, which ever) when I try to paste it (lets say in Paint or and OO presentation), either I can't paste it at all or when i DO paste I get a *.

Im going to run trend micro... I dont think thats the problem though I havent done anything out of the ordinary lately.

EDIT: Same with text too. I am going to copy this line of post and paste it below:

if you're not running Vista, then one could assume that you are running XP correct?

Do you have an install of Office on there?
What year/Version?

all of the "newer" ones have a Clipboard manager on them, it could be somthing like that.

i saw some thread the other day on the internetz where this guy had the same issue. apparently his windows updates were behind and once he updated, that issue went away although he was apparently too take note of what updates he applied. may want to check that.

I did let the windows automatic update do its thing and now... it has stopped! So thanks for the simple suggestion/solution...

Still strange though.

You're all a bunch of nut-cases! :olo:

Any idea what could have caused it in the first place? I know doctors can fix stuff, but it's interesting to know what caused the illness in the first place.

You get it once you've registered for Quake3World. You already have it, but are just in denial.

I ask, because I seem to remember something like this happening to me a few years back. Windows97 era. I would go to paste and it would come out like comic book swearing. I dunno.

It was probably some muckity-muck on Microsoft's end that screwed something up, hence the fix with auto update. Who knows, it's not like us techs actually know what the hell is going on. It's all voodoo magic from here. We just pretend we know what's going on since we like to know that we're smarter and better than you.

On being a nutcase... that just comes with being stuck with the rest of us here in the ass end of the Internet that we call Quake3World. Sorry, there is no cure.
