Grizzly Man: 7.5 / 10
I went into this documentary, about a man named Timothy Treadwell who lives in the Alaskan wilds with grizzly bears for months at a time without any weapons, thinking it was going to wear out its welcome after the first half hour or so. What do you know, 110 minutes later I was still fully engaged as it ended. Virtuoso German New Wave director Werner Herzog (also did the docu Encounters At The End Of The World) fills about half of the runtime with footage Treadwell shot of himself, as no one else could/would brave the "bear maze" to film him, and the other half with interviews of Treadwell's friends, family, and colleagues. He doesn't shy away from pointing out Treadwell's rather serious issues, inconsistencies, and romanticized notions about the world; for example, Treadwell's official reason for doing what he did was to protect the bears, especially from poachers, but statistics show there are extremely low levels of poaching going on in these areas, and his presence didn't really affect that at all -- if anything, his presence inured the bears to humans and probably made it easier for future poachers to get close enough for the kill.
Long story short, it's a fascinating portrait of a troubled and naive but nevertheless awfully intriguing man, who had the balls (or lack of brains) to do what no one else has ever done and probably, hopefully, will never do again.
P.S. Treadwell was killed and partially eaten by a grizzly bear. There is no video footage of it, but Herzog does interview a crazy coroner who all but acts out the scene of TT's death.
Recommended.

I saw it for the second time on Sunday night at Imax, owned.Doombrain wrote:Been trying to get tickets for the imax in london to watch the dark knight but no fucking chance, it's booked up for about two months. Even the normal screen is booked for a few weeks.

Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.

Just got back from the drive-in.
Dark Knight: 10/10. I gotta tell ya, Heath Ledger was fantastic and Two-Face was far cooler than when Tommy Lee Jones did him. Gonna buy this one for my collection.
Get Smart: 8/10. I wasn't expecting much from this. I mean you can't follow Don Adams in this roll. But, The Rock was a definite asset in this movie. And the chick was...WOW.

Yeah, lots of twisted panties in this thread.MKJ wrote:hey lets all hate on drum for not knowing an actress.

Man, Dark Knight was a great movie but it definitely wasn't a 10/10. There's no way it should be considered perfect. Especially considering that the titular character is terribly uninteresting the entire film.
Re: The last movie you saw
indeed, 8/10 is more realistic
Re: The last movie you saw
lol, the Movie Rating Police are back.

Not a strong enough social message, backed by Aretha Franklin's vocals?

I guess I just got my hopes up too high after all the hype. Heath Ledger was really good, otherwise I just wasn't very impressed. Batman wasn't very edgy, in fact he didn't have much character at all.
Re: The last movie you saw
My numbers may be slightly inflated due to my being a huge Batman fan. I'll go as low as 9/10, because I really enjoyed the story and I think Bruce Wayne's depth was right on par with his development as Batman. People forget what a big role Alfred plays in the story. I mean, Alfred made Bruce and the Batman.

Re: The last movie you saw
Honestly, I don't think I would have been nearly as happy with the film if Batman had been more of a focal point. It would have been harder to keep the dark atmosphere.HM-PuFFNSTuFF wrote:hehR00k wrote:Not a strong enough social message, backed by Aretha Franklin's vocals?

Even in the comics, the villains were always cooler than the good guys.

Re: The last movie you saw
some spoilers here....
obviously the joker was the most interesting character in the movie, but i thought batman was pretty interesting as well. it was interesting to see him pushed to the limit and actually show some emotion. how far would he have to go to stop the joker? and how far is too far?
also, i liked how in other superhero movie, the superhero is often faced with two choices...to save the damsel in distress or a train full of people and somehow or other the hero is able to save two at the same time. but here batman is actually human and he's willing to put one person's life over another. he's not perfect.
plus he's batman. he's cool as hell.

Dark Knight: 6/10 Good but not great. Certainly inferior to Batman Begins. Ledger was tip-top in the role, but the spasmodic plotline and the weak characterizations (for everyone besides the Joker) made the whole thing rather unremarkable. I dig Nolan on the whole but this one was a bit of a misfire.

Hannibal Rising (1/5)
Story was awful especially Nazi and Hiroshima.
Revenge was great though.
I really want to do the same to my current boss and many other employers in the past.
