If it was true, then it wouldn't be an irrational belief. And the idiots wouldn't be the ones who believed. they would be the ones who didn't.Fender wrote:I, on the other hand, hope it is a fake. Irrational beliefs like this are basically the same as Nessy, alien visitations and "intelligent design." We don't need to give the idiots of the world something to point at and say, "See! We told you so! My belief in <otherstupidthing> is also true!"
And, no, I don't believe it's true (bigfoot) despite my ex-wifes mother.

You say that a lot (irrational) -- I do not think it means what you think it means (inconceivable!).Peenyuh wrote: If it was true, then it wouldn't be an irrational belief. And the idiots wouldn't be the ones who believed. they would be the ones who didn't.

The fact that something turns out to be true does not necessarily mean that it's irrational NOT to believe that it's true.
Re: Apparently Bigfoot has been found
Believing in impossibilities is irrational. If it can be conceived, it can be done. If something turns out to be true, then it was not impossible. To believe something impossible that is possible (because it turns out to be true) rationalizes the irrational title bestowed to those who did not believe.

Re: Apparently Bigfoot has been found
No. Claims of 'rational' or 'irrational' in this context are done precisely because the ultimate truth/falsity of X (i.e. existence of Bigfoot) is indeterminant at present. In these cases we are concerned with principles of evidence and some normative notion of reasoning. So if little to no credible evidence exists to support the claim of Bigfoot's existence (even if the fucker ACTUALLY exists), it is perfectly rational to suggest that, given the present state of knowledge, Bigfoot's existence is highly improbable. Retroactive assessments of truth and falsity are really beside the point here...claims of rationality/irrationality center on us at a given historical moment and how we go about forming and justifying our beliefs.Peenyuh wrote: If it was true, then it wouldn't be an irrational belief. well bigfoot was a rubber suit.
I'm surprised anyone thought it had any chance of being something other than a hoax.

Re: Apparently Bigfoot has been found
That cop's in Mexico by now.
But I am bummed, it would've been way cool if it had been true.
At least watching all those discovery channel searches for a live giant squid sighting paid off...eh, win some, lose some....
