flip phones are OK, don't know why it really matters to some people
as a previous smart phone junkie (blackberry/nextel series to the ATT blackjack (series 1) to the blackberry pearl to the blackberry curve), i've recently fell back on an unlocked ericsson w810i. Love the handsfree, great quality music, responsive interface, quick enough with the adaptive text IM shit that I can get by.
Only thing i've missed is news feeds and google maps, but have noticed conversely a l-o-t more free time to enjoy life as it occurs around me as i'm free of the palmable technology addiction.

Sony may have managed to pull me out of the RIM camp with the k850i. I'm hoping American tmobile retailers will pick it up soon so I can just extend my contract and get a better deal than $400 shipped.
