Rocket Jumping

Post by Walt Whitman »

What exactly is the correct way to rocket jump? To point the rocket towards the ground and fire, or to just that but only after you've performed a manual jump? Are there any advantages of having the rocket pointed towards the ground at a very specific angle? Are there any lesser known tactics behind the art?

I could make this into a long story ... but let's just say you pretty much know who the vetern quakers are from the style of the rocket jumps ;) (EG: I very rarely just look straight down and fire a rocket into the ground in front of me).

For the most part and as a "vetern" (at 40+ yrs of age) quaker and having played through them all, as I was taught in my earlier days, aim the rocket behind you and hit fire and jump that way your forward momentum will help minimise your damage whilst also giving you greater distance in the forward rocket jump. It's quite a difficult technique to master at first but you soon get used to it. Only switch to hitting a rocket in front if you need height instead of distance. As for RA3 you'll learn that the real art of RJing is to use the surfaces around you to propel yourself around the map, like the wall next to you, again by firing a rocket into the wall just behind you as you strafe jump away from the wall.

You still get script kiddies around who only use a script to RJ and at first I used to say hey dude, learn to RJ yourself but over the years I've come to the conclusion it's really just down to what works best for you. Though using a script and not learning to do it properly will start to tell in mods like RA3 because it's not all about RJing upwards.

Not sure if that helps or not but it should get you started.

Foward distance = whilst moving forward, at the time you need to jump, flick to look behind and down, fire rocket and jump, flick back to looking forward whilst in the air.
Forward height = whilst moving forward, at the time you need to jump, look down, fire rocket and jump, look forward / up whilst in the air.
Double RJ to gain extra height. RJ as above, then before you start to fall, RJ again off a wall near you, you must do the second one before you reach maximum height otherwise you may not pull off the second RJ and also take heavy damage from it. (It's probably best to practice this in RA as most maps have splash damage and falling damage turned off).

The best rocket jumping I ever saw was when I was watching a demo of Apheleon on cpm1a. He would be rl-jumping off of walls, like tele-jumping out of the tele up stairs next to the LG, and rl-jumping off of the wall on the right through the air to the other side of that room. Like rl-jumping twice in a row..looking like sonic the hedgehog. Pretty nice stuff. I think you can still find his demo's over at http://www.challenge-tv.com

Play the Defrag rocketjump map, I think it's called Tow1f.
I features high rocketjumps and rocketclimbs.

Also play that original Q3 map that has the BFG obtainable via a bouncepad which you need to rocketjump up to. Having a goal like that can help motivate you.

Mainly just the Tow1f though.

There are more advanced jumps like rocketjumping sideways or strafejumping into a rocketjump, which you might learn easier if you watch other players do it, from their point of view.

Basically, thiough, learn how to do Tow1f (there are demos to download if you are stuck), learn strafejumping on Defrag asell (the one where you keep jumping over lava seems fine to me), and try to put the two together on some regular maps.

Maybe I should explain a bit more: By "strafejumping into a jump" I mean you strafejump then you do a rocketjump without stopping and standing still. It's basically a running rocketjump except it's strafejumping and rocketjumping instead of just running and rocketjumping. You carry the momentum forwards so you go further aswell as higher.

Actually that reminds me there are some Defrag maps where you have to go high and far with rocketjumps; well to go extra far, in my experience you have to rocketjump backwards - though you can change direction mid air, so long as you do it so that it doesn't interfere with your air control or momentum. Pretty hard I know but that's Defrag for you, it pushes your limits.

There's a lot to be said for just practicing on regular maps, though, cause then you learn jumps that will help your gameplay in battle rather than just Defrag runs - they are good at boosting your skill though. like I said.

I was going to post a link to Defrag but the one in my bookmarks is broken. I'm sure you can find it, though :)

That's for CPM, and it appears to be only about strafejumps.
