Quake 3 Install XPSP3
Hey all.
I think age has taken its toll, or some such. I can't for the life of me get Q3A installed on my machine. It simply will not launch the setup from autorun, root of CD, or from the Q3A directory.
The game plays fine straight from my DVD player, but that isn't the point, I can't patch the game, nor can I install MODS and such.
Below is a brief overview of my system. If more is needed, let me know.
Thanks

God love ya people, I am not feeling the love.
Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
if it plays from dvd, you only need to copy the whole thing to your disk drive

Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
Yep.
- copy from disk to hard drive
- download the 1.32 and 1.32c point releases
- run them in that order
- done (if all is well)

Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
windows defender issue again, probably.
i cant find the article anymore, but I had this problem while installing older games on my XP. what happens is that Windows Defender kills processes that start with a _, and the old InstallShield processes was indeed prefixed with a _.
misantropia's workaround works, tho it wont show up in your 'add/remove programs' list. if you care about that

Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
another you can try (will fix it for other apps, not just q3)

Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
I don't think it is a Windows Defender prob, could be wrong, but I cannot find Defender on my machine.
Okay, so I got it installed on my hard (thanks misanthropia). However I cannot see the install process of patch 1.32 after I execute it. I did wait about a half hour after I launched the 1.32, then copied over the 1.32c.
Q3 now launches with the familiar launch screen, and straight to a white HI-RES screen that doesn't do anything but sit there. I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL for task manager, and then get out my hubble telescope to be able to find the quake.exe to kill it.
I am having trouble now finding out how to reset the initial screen res. I also do not know where to find that damn log file that tells me how the start up went.
More info would be grand. I appreciate the help

lol@hubble.
copying 1.32c over an non 1.32 install will eff it up, so best to undo that.
problem we have to tackle now is why 1.32 wont install. does it give an error, or does it show an installshield progressbar that doesnt move, or is there really nothing happening at all when you doubleclick the icon?

Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
you mean I am supposed to dbl click the icon? HA!
It does nothing, I would have to go back and check if there was a setup.exe running in task manager, but regardless, I dbl click, and it says f@$# off. I noticed drive activity, but that is probably my 8 percent network usage.
Yeah, I assumed that it was wrong without the 1.32 setup completing (or starting), but I really want to get my arse fragged with a rail gun again.

UPDATE
I went old school, and installed 1.30, then 1.31. ver is now 1.31, but 1.32 will not install. Maybe I need to download it from id. I am working on that now.

Re: Quake 3 Install XPSP3
Maybe, as a newbie noob, I should have remembered that I shouldn't trust anything not from the horses mouth.
Don't know why, but D/L ing the 1.32 from the id ftp did the trick. Installed without a hitch. I guess sometimes I should wait for the 40 k/sec download to finish instead of try to find 700 k/sec + because I don't want to wait that long.
Thanks for the help fellow fraggers.
Now will someone please shoot me in the head with a railgun? I deserve it.
PEACE
