Anyone else had problems with this effecting their network performance even when throttled way down?
I'm downloading the DVDs of Closure that Trent leaked a while back. There aren't too many seeders, so I'm only getting 150 - 220 down and pushing about 50 up. Obviously when wide open I can't even open a web page. But even when throttled way down to 16 down and 8 up web pages still time out. Close µTorrent and everything is back to normal.
I even tried enabling QoS on my router with bittorrent as the lowest priority and http as one above normal and that didn't help.
Any other recommended clients? I rarely use bittorrent and I used to use Azerus, but that's bundled with all that other crap now.
µTorrent
Re: µTorrent
I wouldn't use such a thing.
But if I did....nope. No probs with slow downs.

Re: µTorrent
I primarily use µTorrent on Windows and Transmission on Mac and Linux (also available for Windows but haven't bothered installing it).
If your router supports a custom firmware, I used to have the same problem with DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54GL, QoS would sort of work but not properly, so I recently switched to Tomato and QoS works perfectly. My brother's running DD-WRT without problems though, so my QoS issue may be something unique to my setup.
For torrents to throttle properly, make sure you set up a static DHCP IP for your computer, forward ports on both UDP/TCP for µTorrent and check your QoS again.
I was playing ETQW the other night and forgot to turn off my server which was still downloading and I experienced minimal lag.
Is the DVDs of Closure something he released as a free download? Missed any news about that. I'll have to check that out.
@Peenyuh: nothing wrong with using a bittorrent client, it's just a protocol. There are plenty of good legally free stuff on torrents, like my Linux distros among many other things.

Re: µTorrent
Yeah, the Closure release is probably a bit "grey." They planned to officially re-release it, but had problems with Interscope, so Trent just leaked it himself.
I spent tonight playing around with some of the speed settings and it seems better. d/l is currently @ +230 (peer limited, not connection limited) and up is pegged @ 48 and I can still browse. I am running DD-WRT, but I haven't touched QoS since the first time I tried to get it working.12/21/2006 : HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
This one is a guilt-free download.
(shhhh - I didn't say that out loud).
If you know what I'm talking about, cool.

Re: µTorrent
Besides capping the upload and download speeds, try limiting the number of active connections. Some routers don't handle many open connections very well.
