Re: Anyone know about earth wires?
Just leave the earth wire bare, or you could cut it off flush with the outer insulation to make it neater for when you conceal it in the ceiling. As long as your light fitting and bulb have no metallic parts (apart from the contacts in your bulb) you'll be fine.

In normal single-phase household AC wiring, the line and neutral wires are the primary "supply" and "return" wires. You want to have it connected to a solid earth point, but if you don't have one available there, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Let your electrician properly earth it when he comes back.you a sparky as well?

I say read the instructions. Only a fucking retard would have trouble installing a light fixture.

I am just typing heaps of text about my electrocution back in 1982

Nearly ready to start a new topic . Watch for it.
Good read coming up soon .....

You can still have power going to the light.Tsakali wrote:or even the light switch in the room
Just because you turn off the switch, the power could go to the light first, then to the switch, then back to the panel.

Re: Anyone know about earth wires?
the company is opening a UK datacenter, and I've had to learn some electricity basics for getting the correct hardware... this is a good thread, thanks Drum.
First thing I learned is that the Amsterdam facilities jealously guard power consumption per rack, so rack space is at a bare minimum.
Do I understand incorrectly that UK current is not only more efficient, but it's safer? Does anyone have a technical whitepaper in mind?
so--if we're pulling a constant 16 A in UK, you're over the allotted usage and get bent over and fisted. or fined, i can't remember.
there's some kind of a simple calculation (is it wattsxamps) to calculate overall load in Kva or something.
Also, you guys saying 220 ouch-- in the US, we have lower voltage, but higher amperage (which, correct me if i'm wrong NS, is considered deadlier?)--so I don't know if accidentally contacting a couple of bare wires with the finger is necessarily all that dangerous to a normal, healthy person?
P.S. MKJ, Ryo, Eraser, and Saturn, I hope to be coming your way and expect a massive hashing, beering, needle-sharing-and-unprotected-hookering good time after the New Year. Well, maybe all that except for the hash, needle sharing and hookers.

I come from a family of electricians, I found the prospect of being a wire jerker boring. You have fun with that Yellow Jacket, though.Scarface wrote:So you've never really used tools then?Nightshade wrote:

Re: Anyone know about earth wires?
I don't work res, i do industrial/automation/PLC programming. But nice try
Re: Anyone know about earth wires?
correct. static electricity is about 10kV but hardly any Amps. you dont hear about people getting electrocuted after rubbing balloons much do you.Underpants? wrote: we have lower voltage, but higher amperage (which, correct me if i'm wrong NS, is considered deadlier?)--

Etten-Leur lol no, I live in the most dangerous city in the world: Gouda. Even the bus drivers are too scared to go there.
Re: Anyone know about earth wires?
.. but you're welcome to come too, obviously

Re: Anyone know about earth wires?
