dvd drive problems on 2 laptops

Post by axbaby »

i have 2 laptops and both cannot play most cd's or dvd's.
some legit DVD movies i purchase work, some don't , some DVD's CD's that come with hardware work .. some don't.
why would some work and others don't?

i suspect there is some sort of copy protection scheme that has been installed by itself that
is messing with my drives.

is there a way to see if i can see and remove any scheme that is fucking with my drives.

I would try booting into safe mode or a live linux environment and see if any of the problems still occur. I would agree that it sounds like a software issue more than a hardware one, but making sure never hurts. From there I would check your msconfig services and startup, see if there is anything weird looking, and try and google the various things that are loaded, see what the internet says about them.

I just installed a new combo drive in my desktop, and it wasn't showing up. I found the solution ( http://www.pchell.com/hardware/cd_drive ... e_39.shtml ). Most all the stuff I read kept coming back to updating the firmware though. I did that, and it didn't help. You're having a different problem, so, I thought I would mention the firmware and the solution I found. You never said you fixed it so I mention this now.

Edit: keep in mind, I don't know what OS you have...

Try downloading the latest ac3filter. You may have a codec issue. If that doesn't work, update your firmware.

Or just use VLC and not install any silly codecs.
