The Day The Earth Stood Still = *10/10

this is the pinnacle of not acting for cardboard reeves, it's hard to imagine anyone else ever not acting this well again. kathy bates provides brilliant support by only 50% acting. never really noticed her in anything before, but here you can see a professional striving for the most thoroughly unconvincing performance of her career. that's not to draw credit from the rest of the cast and crew. they did a fantastic job of building the movie around the star's rollercoaster emotional journey. incredible, an alien 3 for our times.

Too bad. I read this sci fi book as a kid (that would be forty five years ago) and I still remember it. Gonna see it anyway.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) - 7/10
Entertaining. I'm sure the Keanu version will seem even worse soon after viewing the original.

Double Indemnity (1944) - 9/10
Great archetypal film noir. Stanwyck is not among my favourite femmes fatales (she has nothing on Bacall) but Barton Keyes (not the protagonist; his boss) is one of my favourite hard-boiled characters ever.

Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) - 7/10
Couldn't seem to figure out its focus. Cagney is one of the ultimate badasses. Needed way more Bogart.

M (1931) - 7/10
Good old Fritz Lang. Very interesting to see his first sound film after watching Metropolis, etc., and to note the ways he utilized the new technology and made sound (specifically the killer's whistling) into an integral motif, similar to what Hitchcock did in The 39 Steps, which I believe was similarly one of his very first sound films. I'm a big Peter Lorre fan, too, so "M" made me want to go back and watch "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" which was the first movie I ever saw him in.

The Strangers (2008) - 7/10
A little scary, but didn't do nearly enough to differentiate itself from contemporary lowest-common-denominator horror/slasher flicks. "Funny Games" was definitely superior. However, I like Liv Tyler quite a bit. (Does anyone else think she and Michelle Monaghan -- from M:I3, Eagle Eye, etc. -- are twins separated at birth?)

Zack and Miri Make a Porno 8/10

This movie was funny as hell, and it didn't drag on as most movies seem to do lately.

Double Indemnity is a good film noir. My favourite is probably The Maltese Falcon.

Is this out yet? If so, in theatres or is it on DVD? I want to see it.

Yeah, I heard good things.
Van Damme in a 'serious' role...should be interesting, because until now he's shown the acting capacities of a wooden plank.

Transsiberian:
Meh, I expected a bit more with Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley in the cast.
Didn't add much to the 'things go awry for tourists'-genre.
Not unpleasant to watch, though.

in the valley of elah - 7.5/10 - very quiet (i.e. almost no music, and long silences), understated character-driven iraq war critique

The Dark Night (believe it or not) 8.5 - 10

Bought it on BR and I'm not disappointed. The conversion's good like Batman Returns, and when I say good I mean excellent.

The only thing that let it down for me was Dent's transition to madness, it didn't really make sense which is a shame because everything else in the film is brilliantly paced and thought out.

Oh, apart from that fucking bike made out of two front wheels and a bar of metal.

Terminator 3 - 7/10

Stupid fun. Not a fan of the story or the script. The action kind of sucked but there were some neat effects. I also liked seeing the beginning of skynet.
