I lowered my fov and sens

Post by DRuM »

After years of fov 110 (and 105 for rail), sensitivity 7 with a logitech MX510, and my windows cursor speed on the 4th notch out of 11 notches with no accel, I've now lowered my fov to 90 ( ) and sens to 6. Haven't adjusted windows sens. What a difference. I've tried 90 on and off and never liked it. But I've gotten used to it and it's making my aim so much more accurate. And that one notch down on sens is making a big difference too, far more control.

I asked a couple of great players who constantly win games on servers I'm on what their fov is. They both said 90 fov. So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
Of course the trade off is less all around view, but it's not bothering me now.

I have a feeling though that perhaps the sens adjustment is making the biggest difference in accuracy for me.

Yeah, I slowly worked my way down over the years from fov 120 to 100 with a lowish sensitivity plus some mouse accel for close combat and to do quick 180s.

I don't think I've ever tried accel, maybe I should try it.
One of these players with 90 fov told me his sens was 1.
Perhaps he has accel on. Otherwise I imagine it would feel like pushing an elephant through quicksand.

Different mice have different sens' as well. My MX300 was perfect on sens 2.5 accel 1.5 with no windows accel and 2 notches down in mouse properties. All mice I have bought since then take lots to adjusting to find that same feel. I have used fov 120 since I can remember, but I can see how as you improve your game the need to "see" your opponents is less cos you always know where they are. Apart from TDM maybe. 110 is nice, I couldnt go any lower or I'd be running into walls. 120 gives you good jumping accuracy, looking straight ahead.

I forgot how to adjust the fov... could you tell me please? Also, Could you elaborate on the accl settings? I mean what exactly does that improve? I usually just play around with the sense.

/cg_fov 120
/cl_mouseaccel 0.5

Think of mouse accel as sensitivity that increases/decreases as you sweep the mouse around. IMO, it makes quick turnarounds easier but proper aiming more difficult.

Yeah... I don't think my aim needs any more challenges than it already has. :olo: I'll just leave that one be. The fov, though, is something that has helped me in the past. Somewhere along the line of re installs I forgot how to do that. Thank you.

I've tried and test a fair few (ok ... lots and lots and lots) of settings over the years.

I always end up going back to

cg_fov 110
com_maxfps 83 / 127
mouse accel off
low-mid windows sens (4 of 11), q3 mouse sens (5.25) (fairly high sens in total)
With a razer deathadder.

It's just what works for me. I may not be as accurate as some .. but they have to catch and then hit me first before I'm up in their face ;)

I couldn't imagine playing with anything different to what i have.

*1400dpi laser mouse (laser not optical)
*/sensitivity 3.5
*no accel what so ever (default in_mouse)

I have tried other people computer and it feels like having sex with a fat old man. which is something no-one wants to do..

i hope.

Right now I'm using:

cg_fov 110
in_mouse -1
sensitivity 4 (6th notch in XP)
cl_mouseaccel .1

I change my setup constantly though. My mouse is a Logitech MX518 with the Logitech Set Point drivers, standard DPI/hz/etc. Also, that's with Quake Live though as I've switched to that from Quake 3.

I've a feeling I will probably go back to 110 again or maybe 105. My playing is definitely better due to just the sens being lowered. But I do prefer a fov which gives me more all round vision. I'll have to see how it goes.

I put the game on hold again anyway and haven't played for a few days. I can't play Q3 for just an hour or two and then stop, I find it too addicting and play at any opportunity, so I just stopped for a while to make sure other stuff gets done.

Sensitivity is irrelevant. Toxic could pick up a Pentium III with a broken mouse and school you. It took me a few years to come to this realization, but if you practise all the hours you put into messing with your settings, you might actually see improvement in your playing. My config has stayed the same since 2003.

Hmm, well, sens 6 is what I use and it's good for me. Sens 7 however is rubbish for me, so I'm not sure how you conclude that sens is irrelevant.

I was once told that a good guitar player could make even the cheapest guitar sound good. The same applies here. If you are good enough you can compensate for whatever your presented with. Skill is independent from equipment. For the record, I suck ass at q3 but I do quite well in other things and I know these things to be true.

Well, what Deji said is true. But you have to be comfortable with the setup at first. Personally I could probably play just as well with a ball mouse from 1992 as I do with my MX518 but it would take alot of setting up and testing new values and seeing the effects it has to do it. If you think you can gain an advantage by trying new values, I say go for it.

I understand all that, and I'm aware that for instance, zero4 only ever played a ballmouse. But evryone has settings they prefer and in my case, sens 6 is preferable. I know top players like toxic can wipe the floor with all of us whatever they use, but those top players will probably do a quick setting change like sens and fov to be more comfortable. Isn't that the point?
