I used to be able to do this long ago...

router : 172.24.0.1 Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT
wireless AP : 172.24.0.2 Linksys WAP54G
computer : 172.24.0.9 running Vista Home Premium connected via Ethernet to wireless AP
subnets all set to 255.255.255.0

What mode should I use on the AP? AP, AP client, wireless repeater or wireless bridge?

Or should I use DHCP for the AP and/or computer?

What should my default gateway on the AP and computer be? I've tried .1 and .2 respectively, but that doesn't seem to be working.

I can't believe I've forgotten this stuff.

Use repeater.

Def GW should be internal IP of the router, assuming you're manually assinging an IP to the PC in the same range, 172.24.0.XXX

DHCP would be easier if you're not serving anything from the PC, but since it looks like you've changed the IP range on the router already, you'll also need to edit the range for available DHCP addresses, if that's possible with that router.

I'll second the Tomato firmware recommendation. A colleague of mine has been using it for awhile now and has nothing but good to say about it.

K... I gave up on this for a while. I have no idea how I had it working at one point. Anyway, I eventually bricked my WAP54G by botching a firmware upgrade to DD-WRT. I bought a 2nd WRT54GL and have both my Xbox360 and Blu-ray player hooked up to it now. Client bridge mode is the correct way to go.

Subnet is 172.24.0.x

Brief topology:
WRT54GL #1 running DD-WRT v24sp1 in AP mode - WAN to cable modem (DHCP), LAN address .1, running DHCP, QoS, UPnP, VPN, afterburn and using OpenDNS
WRT54GL #2 running DD-WRT v24sp1 in Client Bridge mode - IP adress .2, GW .1, forwards DHCP .1, etc. two hardwired clients, afterburn enabled

Read up on the wiki and DD-wrt forums and there is a guide on how to make a J-tag cable to un-brick that router.

Ohh, there are also guides and etc to Un-brick it without opening it up.. they are kinda hit or miss though.

I didn't feel like making a cable, so I just took it apart for the hell of it then tossed it in the trash.

BTW, I did end up installing Tomato and I noticed that my QoS is working much better (by 'better' I mean it didn't really do anything at all before) than DD-WRT. So thumbs up for Tomato!

i'm running Tomato on my Buffalo right now, and i cant see any real difference... except that it has MLPPP support ( not stock )..

Hmmm... that might be enough for me to try Tomato. I rarely use bittorent, but when I do, it seems to hog all my bandwidth, even with tight up/down controls.

You should check to see if your ISP Packetshapes, That would give the feeling that all of the bandwidth is being used up.. but when you check the speeds.. its not..

That is why i got MLPPP Going on my Router, so i can Bypass that. ( if you are interested in that, you would need to have DSL, and an ISP That supports it.. btw )

hmm, I never thought about using QoS for torrents - only VoIP. Not a bad idea...

Aside from QoS, is there any other reason to use DD-WRT? I've thought about it off and on for quite a while, but never really decided because I wasn't sure what the benefits were. I also barely know jack about it, and it seems like there are a dozen different places to find all the instructions and files you need to do it -- so I guess I've been a little scared of bricking my WRT600N router too. I've only had it a few months.

Just tons more options and a much nicer interface. You can basically treat your router like a mini Linux box. Telnet, Samba, cron, etc.
Upgrades on supported hardware (the WAP54G I bricked wasn't) is usually just a matter of resetting back to factory defaults and uploading the newest mini distro. Then reboot and upload the standard if you want the extra features.

I'm a Linux noob - been 7 or 8 years since I've touched it - so I probably wouldn't get much out of it, except maybe the QoS?

Also you forgot Fender, i haven't used a Linksys Firmware yet that didn't need to be re-booted weekly/bi-monthly due to slow downs and maby even disconnections..

Wile DD/Tomato/etc Will work fantastic for months on end.

the longest stint i ran my WRT on was 6 months with no reboot, no nothing... and i was torrenting twice/three times a week, UPNP constantly, Dynamic-Dns, etc etcc..

Yeah, that's definitely true. Also I've had problems where I simply could NOT get two devices to communicate properly. Install DD-WRT and everything works as expected.
