I watched Waltz With Bashir a few days ago. I'm going to give it 8.5/10, because the format was incredibly interesting: it is an animated documentary about the Israeli-Palestinian-Christian conflict of the 1982 Lebanese war, which culminated (or maybe climaxed would be a better term) with the Sabra and Shatila massacre. It combines rotoscoped (filmed) interviews with animated reconstructions of actual events, and narrative-wise follows the (re-)remembering of the massacre by a former Israeli soldier who repressed all recollection of the event and, after hearing about a friend's dream sparks one tiny memory, tracks down a number of other parties involved in order to piece together the exact nature of his participation that night. The animation approach allows them to recreate things that would be difficult -- logistically, financially, emotionally, and politically -- to portray otherwise. It's got some cool dream/memory sequences, amazing art direction, and a really nice, wide-ranging score which lays down everything from mournful lullaby music to throbbing dance beats.

My problem with the film is along the lines of "the lady doth protest too much." It is pretty well documented that the massacre of Palestinians in refugee camps was perpetrated by the Phalangi Christian group in retaliation for the assassination of the eponymous Bashir, a Phalangist leader who was likely about to become their president. Over and over the interviewees seem to whine about how it was the Christians, the Christians who did this thing! But we know that, the point is the Israeli defense forces allowed them into the camps where they committed the massacre, and the main character (SPOILER HERE) ultimately realizes that he was one of a group of Israeli soldiers firing flares into the sky, which gave the Phalangists the light by which to carry out their sordid mission. The film is all about guilt, and yet none of the characters can stop passing the buck. That struck me as awfully silly. (Maybe it's because it strikes too close to home in an Israeli production, or maybe it's because they don't want to be seen to confess to anything the Muslim Middle East could then take retribution for, I don't know; but Ariel Sharon was forced to resign as Defense Minister over the scandal of this massacre, and yet he later became their President, despite the recommendations of an inquiry that he never be allowed to hold public office again ... what does that say about the notions of punishment and penance?)

All in all, riveting in narrative and visual terms, but a little bit problematic -- that might even be too strong a word, what I mean to say is insufficiently transparent -- politically and ideologically.

I didn't care too much for it. You can tell the director tried to go for some real deep and profound connections between the lead FBI agent and Don Cheadle's character and how there are these big parallels between his Christian life and Cheadle's Muslim one. The movie also tries to make a statement about how the US isn't always the honorable and good guy when it comes to things by including a character who says things like "YEA BUT WE DON'T KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE WITH OUR WARS" and him being rebutted by someone saying "OH BUT THE US DOES YOU JUST HAVEN'T OPENED YOUR EYES MAN." (not exact quotes, but close enough). In short, the movie tries so hard to be profound and deep that in the end its all just ineffective. The storyline is OK in and of itself, but it wasn't what I expected. I rented this expecting a bit more action (along the lines of the Bourne series, not a movie attempting to be something like Syriana but not doing a great job of it).

I'd give it a 6/10 because Cheadle is a good actor and he does a nice enough job with his character.

Picked up The Godfather trilogy on Blu Ray, having never seen it before, and it's excellent.
Just watched Part II last night and was suitably impressed, particularly with De Niro's performance. Talk about a hard act to follow, but De Niro plays the young Vito Corleone with aplomb.
My only criticism is that Coppola uses music a bit too frequently in this movie compared to the previous chapter. Some scenes came off weaker because of added music, where the absence of it would have had a lot more impact.

The Blu Ray restoration itself is fantastic, and looks like it was shot yesterday.
Highly recommended.

Ownage. Only negative thing I can say is Leon looks odd, but other than that it was fucking awesome. Best game to movie transition I've seen, easy. This is how all game>movies should be done from now on. If you have even of a sniff of liking for the RE games, watch this.

I agree, it was kinda meh. Brad Pitt was the only bright spot in that movie.

I agree BAR was a bit of a letdown, for a Coen flick that is, but still quite enjoyable.
I particularly enjoyed seeing Clooney and Pitt playing total douche bags for a change, instead of their usual 'cool' roles.

Saw Splinter yesterday.
Pretty much walking the beaten path of people locking in and protecting themselves against creepy aggressor.
But, unlike Alien Raiders, which I also watched recently, they got it right, with effective gory effects and good pace.
Still holds nothing on The Mist or The Thing, of course.
