Burn After Reading
an underwhelming attempt by the Coens. even Brad Pitt's character - while refreshing - got stale halfway through the movie.
and am I the only one getting a bit tired of Coen movies with Clooney *again*, JK Simmons *again*, etc?

Hellboy 2.
It was OK but irritated me with this OMG there's millions of un-naturals living in the cities and we've never noticed before tripe.
7 - 10.

Give this one a bit of time to bounce around in your head then re-watch it. I found it improved a lot after that. First impressions for me weren't good but I like it way more now.4days wrote:rocknrolla 4/10

Rocknrolla 7.5/10
Similar in style and content to Snatch and Lock, Stock... but that's a good thing.

I found HB2 quite enjoyable but it irked me as well in ways; in particular the fantastical ancient-elf-history which i swear to Jebus was taken shot for shot out of Fellowship of the Ring. Ugh.Doombrain wrote:Hellboy 2.

"Ace in the Hole" - 6.5/10
I downloaded this because someone labelled it Film Noir, but while it could be argued that it is some kind of hybrid noir it really doesn't have all the archetypal elements in place. It's about a print reporter who's fallen from grace (Kirk Douglas) and when he moves to a small-time Albuquerque paper and discovers a local man trapped in a mine in a mountain possibly haunted by ancient Indian spirits he sees his ticket back to the big time (NYC) papers via a bit of sensationalism. Solid performance by Douglas, an interesting & subtle take on the "femme fatale" (don't know the actress, too lazy to look her up), but pretty much every plot point and moral lesson has been subsumed into generic convention and become cliché so for a modern audience it just doesn't have much beyond the acting in its favour. Pretty mediocre direction, and I can't even remember noticing the musical score, which means the composer did a competent enough job but certainly didn't go above and beyond the call of duty.

Rescue Dawn 8/10
This was a pretty good tale of a Vietnam vet escaping from captivity. I felt most of the movie was very well shot and the acting was really quite good. Great cast, definitely worth watching.

he was a vietnam vet but he was lost in laos right? i thought the movie was decent to pretty good (but not great). there was a lot of crazy shit going on in SE asia during that time--the movie makes me want to read about it more.

After watching the special features on the Blu Ray I had a greater appreciation for the movie. All the scenery and trudging through the jungle barefoot was real. Christian Bale actually ate maggots and chewed on a snake.

Re: The last movie you saw
Just watched Slumdog Millionaire
It was good, but not great. Slightly overrated. I agree with this comment (copied from wikipedia): Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle states that, "Slumdog Millionaire has a problem in its storytelling. The movie unfolds in a start-and-stop way that kills suspense, leans heavily on flashbacks and robs the movie of most of its velocity. The filmmakers' motives are sincere. The story is interesting enough. Yet the whole construction is tied to a gimmicky narrative strategy that keeps Slumdog Millionaire from really hitting its stride until the last 30 minutes. By then, it's just a little too late."

You haven't done this yet. Hypocrite.Pauly wrote:OK time to bring out this thread again.
What was the last film you watched and give it a score out of 10, with any comments you want to add.

Re: The last movie you saw
Iron Man Blu-Ray.
Great film although I still think the end battle is a little shit, and short. The fact that Jeff Bridges character builds that suit so quickly is a bit shit.
Film= 8 out of 10.
HD quality= 8 out of 10

Just rewatched Tron.
No point in giving it a rating, as I imagine everyone knows what it is. It was fascinating to see how blatant and unapologetic the political and social allegories were back then. The bad guys are red, hate freedom, and believe in centralization of duties. Wow, subtle one there guys. I suppose it was somewhat odd to have this be effectively a corporate computer system that represented communism, but I doubt that the ambiguity was intentional.

Re: The last movie you saw
Transsiberian: 6/10 Good, but some bits felt...er...forced or something...in an effort to keep everything together plotwise and motivate my caring. Still pretty effective though.

yes it's a flat out Snatch /LSTSB imitation which tries to pull all the same cards out, but unfortunately all the good cards are spread amongst the players on the table....so no winning hand anywhere in sight
mindless drivel
