IRC is basically a chat room protocol. You connect to a server with an IRC client and then join a chat room so that you can talk to a bunch of other people in real-time.

1) Get the Firefox addon Chatzilla or mIRC (Win), Colloquy (Mac), Xchat (Linux) or any other number of IRC clients.

2) Connect to the irc.quakenet.org server and get on the #quake3world channel. Using Chatzilla, just click here:
irc://irc.quakenet.org/#quake3world
(tip: add a bookmark to your bookmarks toolbar)

3) Change your name by typing, /nick NAME. You can also set this in preferences.
