I work in bear country and I have a shotgun that I carry--a nickel plated Fabarms SDASS Trainer. I put a Knoxx recoil reducing stock on it, which can adjust to whomever has to carry it, and called it a day. I hope to never have to shoot it in the field.

What about an alarm system? I don't know your locale but if an alarm won't be heard (isolated home) you could always set a man trap but don't catch yourself. That would be embarrassing.

I've had two experiences where I could have used violent defense in my home because of intruders. But I resolved it without having to use a firearm. But if needs be, its good to know I've got the backup ready to go. If you're smart about it, there's no reason not to have one...
