Flash and a good tripod are probably the best investments.

yeah, don't waste cash on a shitty tripod because it will just let you down.

Already seeing how useful it is to bounce light off in different directions or just use non-direct lighting for pictures. Plus I like the heavier feel of the camera. One thing I think Canon did wrong with the XSi is make it so small compared to the first Canon Rebel. My next purchase will probably be a battery grip to make the camera feel even more solid in my hands.

While "Bouncing" does have its reasons of usage, it can be ignored with a proper diffuser.

It is here I will state that there are no real market diffusers that work to the needs of real camera enthusiast, so I introduce to you home made types of the action.....

Tupperware, transparent, rounded, can be cut and taped to cover the flash, (yeah, I know it will piss the wife off to sacrifice a good piece of Tupperware, but she will get over it).Depending on the mill (ie: millimeter thickness) will depend on how much diffusion you will do. Less thick will make more flash back, too thick and you really don't light the subject up. A flash is a good thing, if you like the sparkely flashbacks. If you don't, but want excellent lighting, diffusing is the way to go. Experiment with other ways to diffuse the lighting. A trans milk jug will work. Depending on the level of light you wish, one or two layers could work,(cut accordingly of course).

See one of my previous posts for defusing with medical gauze.

I know it don't make much seance to apply some kind of cheap shit by tape to a decent flash, but experimentation and the lack of sparkle from the flash is what every flash user looks for.

I was thinking about some wax paper and cutting it into a shape that I could tape together over the edge of the flash like a box too...I seem to recall seeing something like that online once

What I'm aiming to set up is a home portrait studio of sorts. I've seen some whole portrait studio setups on ebay with the umbrella lights and all, but have no real idea what I would need.

Its becoming that way but compared to what I used to spend golfing, its not so bad. My clubs are still much more $$ than I have in the camera and I used to play over 100 times per year easy. I can't do that with my neck anymore, so this has provided me another good place to spend the money. Unfortunately its impossible for me to win anything taking pictures, whereas I did OK golfing.

lol form.

Get one of these, tnf.

And if you can bounce the light, always do that instead of direct onto the subject to avoid shadows. Using the defuser will help take the sharp edges away.

Thank you thank you.
I need to go have a trophy made to go with the golf ones. Do they make little statues of a guy with a camera to put on a trophy?

I wouldn't put wax paper over a flash, tnf. One thing you might look into is getting a sampler of lighting gels. They'll have all sorts of stuff you can put over your flash, including diffusers.

I like natural light too, but if you choose to shoot in low light with no flash, you're gonna need a tripod or something to brace against. That, and you better hope that your subject isn't moving.

Still using film and scanning from home, so pardon the grain and dust, hehe.

Imagine taking a picture of someone's head against a wall, there's going to be a sharp shadow outline from the direct light of the flash.
A defuser will break up the light and help take away those sharp lines. There are lots of different types of defusers from small to large like a softbox.
Bouncing will redirect the light from a close surface onto the subject which should cast the shadow at an angle outside of the frame.
