xer0s, please post valid sources for your information. Billions? on pot? it's a 50 dollar fine here in denver for holding up to an ounce (an ounce!), with no jailtime or other processing. Denver actually legalized it, but it's illegal at the state level. I'm under the impression that fining people (as with parking/traffic tickets, which is what this basically amounts to with your average "pot bust") actually generates municipal funds, not vice-versa...

Oh, and a link showing how pot has been introduced as a mainstream pasttime.

I don't need sources. Simply subtract what the government is spending on law enforcement, border patrol, ATF, court systems, lawyers, ect, and add what they would make if it was legalized, taxed, and sold under their control. It would be billions. Pot is the number one cash crop in the world. And they aren't seeing a dime of that. Except what they take from dealers that they bust, which doesn't even scratch the surface.

A report was done by Dr. Jeffrey Miron, visiting professor of economics at Harvard University.

The report estimates that legalizing marijuana would save $7.7 billion per year in government expenditure on enforcement of prohibition. $5.3 billion of this savings would accrue to state and local governments, while $2.4 billion would accrue to the federal government.

If it were legalized and taxed, "Revenue from taxation of marijuana sales would range from $2.4 billion per year if marijuana were taxed like ordinary consumer goods to $6.2 billion if it were taxed like alcohol or tobacco."

actually since the proliferation of hydroponics and great seeds for outdoors, more money stays in the country since the source of supply is increasingly domestic.
