This year's flu/cold/respiratory shit

Post by tnf »

Right now there is one of the most virulent strains of some respiratory bug going around that I've ever seen. High schools have been ranked as the germiest places on earth to work, so it isn't surprising that lots of people get sick, but this one particular strain is something. I had 40 students out today and left work early myself, and am out tomorrow. I don't get them that often, thankfully, but when I do colds and the flu usually kick the crap right out of me.

Anyone else had symptoms that go like this?

Get a severely congesting head cold that last a couple days - no real cough, just stuffed head.

About 1-2 weeks later you get the real whammy - chest starts to hurt really bad, whether you are coughing or not. Bones hurt, skin hurts, joints hurt, eyes burn, nose runs, really dry and racking cough...

Have fun if you have the pleasure of getting it.

I've had the bastard for the past 5 days. Almost exact symptoms except the cough hit a lot sooner (after day 3).

I have a bio-psych exam to tackle tomorrow too.

I'm enjoying this though oddly enough because I rarely get sick so this feeling is very unusual to me.

Not so much as a sniffle.

Last week I got off the worst cold I've had in 10 years: stuffy nose, ears plugged, pain swallowing. Usually I can kick a cold in under two days but this one lasted nearly a week.

The other odd thing is this is the third cold I've gotten in two months; usually I only get them every other year or so.

Probably not quite the same bug tnf described, but I've currently got a terrible violent chesty cough and snottiest cold which has lasted over 3 weeks so far and made me feel a little fatigued. The constant coughing alone drains me. Naturally I've had to cut down on the smoking. I went to the doctor 10 days ago and got a Salbutinol inhaler which does help break down chest mucus. I rang her again yesterday, said to her that this cold and cough is hanging around too long and could she prescribe an antibiotic. She prescribed me 28 Tiloryth 250mg (Erythromycin) capsules for the medically inclined here, 4 a day for a week. She also prescribed me another inhaler Clenil Modulite 100MCG which is an anti inflammatory steroid. I read the instructions and it says clenil is for asthma sufferers, which I'm not, but she must have thought it was strong enough to clear my symptoms. It's getting better I think.

I didn't think it could get worse than it was last night, but it has. Don't really want to use another sick day but might have no choice.

People that had this in the last few weeks, do you remember about what day you started feeling better? Hoping it will be one of those 24-48 hour deals, but I don't think that is the case here.

I coughed up phlegm this morning that was incredibly disgusting in its thickness and color...deep brownish green, consistency of thick pudding. Great stuff.

Nasal irrigation will go a long way towards preventing sickness:

Nice  I've been blowing that nasty crap out of my nose in huge quantities in the shower when it has a chance to break up from the steam.

I also have a funny rattling deep in my chest when I breathe and I occasionally cough up some gross stuff.
