HULK
Wiki Clicky
Eric Bana as Dr. Bruce Banner / Hulk
Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross
Sam Elliott as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross
Nick Nolte as David Banner
This is the 2003 Version. Strangely I never did see it at the time.... Now I know why
I suppose entertaining as I did watch it to the end, but is (was) a watch once movie IMO .....5/10

Watchmen, IMAX version. 7/10 or so.
I'm impressed that they managed to pull it off, and that they nailed the most important character in the whole thing. My problem with the concept still stands -- the story is way too big for a movie. It would have been told much better had it been in some kind of mini-series format (i.e. a 12-episode "season" with the production values of BSG or something).
It felt way too rushed, like they were simply going along with a storyboard of key scenes from the comic book, and filming them in order. While they nailed some of the stuff, alot of the impact was left out. The backstory of where Rorschach's face came from (and whose dress it was), the extended feeling of the time he was in prison, and the gradual breakdown of his doctor, etc. The editing of Dr. Manhattan's origin story is a great example. There's none of the feeling of how long and painful it would have been for a disembodied intelligence to recreate his own body from fundamental particle fields up -- just a few quick cuts of filmed comic panels, and "poof", he exists.
It was pretty much what I expected it to be (a summary of the core plotline), but it still managed to be really good and worth watching, if only for the opening credit sequence.

Watched the first half of Religulous yesterday, will finish today. It's OK. A lot of it seems to be made of sort of ad hoc arguments by Maher. I get that he doesn't see how smart people can be religious, but it seems like each interview he gives ends up going to "how can you believe this shit?" That's all well and good, but I'd have liked to see him address the spectrum of belief from the literalist to the person like Francis Collins (the head of the human genome project, an evolutionist and strong Christian). I guess I was hoping for some more high-brow debate with guys like that. Maybe that will come in the 2nd half of the movie. I agree with his position of "I just don't know" at this point, though, and am genuinely intrigued at how anyone can be so certain about something for which there is so little evidence (by that I am talking not about whether or not there is some God, but rather how someone can be so sure that their specific religion is really the truth).
I have Body of Lies sitting here. Need to watch that...how was it to those of you who have?

I liked Body of Lies a lot but most people I know thought it was mediocre at best.tnf wrote:Watched the first half of Religulous yesterday, will finish today. It's OK. With regards to Religulous I liked it as well but I found it fairly hypocritical that his anti-religious view is almost the exact same (just on the other end of the spectrum) of a lot of the zealots he was interviewing. They were both about cramming ideologies down someone's throat.
Also, I wish he came up with some better arguments than "Have you read this shit? Talking snakes aren't real!"
Highlights of Religulous for me were the interviews with the priest outside the Vatican and the interview with Jesus at that religious theme park.

Body of Lies: 5/10 Middle of the road in all respects. Two Rolls-Royces in the garage and all you do is use them to run to the local shit-mart for beer and tampons. After seeing this and remembering American Gangster, I think Ridley Scott has lost his way.

Re: The last movie you saw

What kind of masochist voluntarily watches Uwe Boll cack
You just know it's a disappointing and aggrevating 90 minute time waster.
Saw Lakeview Terrace last night.
Very meh.
Samuel Jackson is usually able to make any movie worthwhile, but even he couldn't save this thing.
This stuff has all been done before, and a lot better.

There is a Farcry movie? WTF?
Anyways...
Watchmen 8/10
Deliverance 6/10
St Elmo's Fire 4/10 (Joel Schumacher makes THE shittiest movies I have ever seen, with the exception of Lost Boys of course)
The Ice Storm 6/10

Re: The last movie you saw
underwhelming. average. And if one didn't much care for Kingdom of Heaven, that makes 3 average movies in a row for the 'Admiral of the Fleet'. His brother Tony seems to be getting better...but Ridley is treading water or whatever. His best days seem to be behind him I'm afraid.Chupacabra wrote:what was wrong with american gangster?

Re: The last movie you saw
I completely agree. American Gangster was overwhelmingly average, and there was nothing Denzel could have done to save the movie. Kingdom of Heaven was decent, but nothing amazing. I haven't seen Body of Lies, but it doesn't look like anything special either.Hannibal wrote:underwhelming. average. Watchmen - 8/10
Knowing nothing about the original storyline or what to expect when seeing this movie, I was quite pleased.
The whole "this takes place in the '80s" thing kept messing with me though every time I saw stuff like floppy discs being used as a regular storage medium.
I think my favorite scenes all revolved around Rorschach. Definitely my favorite character. The whole french fry scene was great
The Owl was a lame dork though. I could have done without him.

Re: The last movie you saw
is there a watchman character that can see in 'quantum time'? i have a student who is a comic freak and tells me that he is working on teaching himself to do this, and that it can be done. I hope he figures it out!
Re: The last movie you saw
Dr. Manhatten. Though it's not "quantum time". He's just omnicient and sees the past, present, and future all at once.tnf wrote:is there a watchman character that can see in 'quantum time'? i have a student who is a comic freak and tells me that he is working on teaching himself to do this, and that it can be done. Re: The last movie you saw
Considering he's an integral part of the story I doubt you could've done without him.Silicone_Milk wrote:Watchmen - 8/10

Then it will really be something if he pulls it off.Jackal wrote:Dr. Manhatten. Though it's not "quantum time". umm, wut? a human neuron has an average frequency of around 20Hz, doesn't it? as i understood it, decoherence typically occured at something on the order of planck times (5.4 * 10^-44 s).tnf wrote:is there a watchman character that can see in 'quantum time'? i have a student who is a comic freak and tells me that he is working on teaching himself to do this, and that it can be done.
