Had my first ambulance ride today
Had my first ambulance ride today
Never had the pleasure of a 911 call and ambulance ride to the ER until this morning when an 8mm kidney stone decided to leave its happy home and attempt to make its way down the ureter. Before I had left 8 hours later (with 5mm of the stone still hanging out in the proximal third of the ureter - it fragmented and a 3mm piece passed when I was there) I had been given 2 IV injections of fentanyl in the ambulance and 6 IV injections of dilaudid in the ER. Partial blockage, some fluid backup in the kidney, and now it is wait and see what happens while we cross out fingers that this will be able to make its way out without any surgical intervention. Best way to spend a Saturday.
I thought I had experienced pain before with the stones I've already passed, this morning made those feel like a massage. The ambulance guy thought I was going into shock on the ride over.
Otherwise, my day went pretty well.

Really depends on the size of the stone and whether or not it gets caught up in the ureter. The pain yesterday was.Doombrain wrote:is the pain crippling? my mother had this years ago and i suspect i'll have it at some point. can't wait.

As they were rolling my stretcher into the ER you could see the instant recognition of what was happening on the faces of all the male employees in there as they heard me. There was an instinctive cringe with most of them.obsidian wrote:Hope you feel better soon. That hurts just reading your description.
I have passed over 100 kidney stones, this one was so much worse than all the previous ones that I wasn't even 100% sure what was going on. At the same time, taking a jules-type perspective on the situation, it is interesting to look at how the body starts to respond when you reach a level of pain where there is no possible way to manage it mentally or with drugs.

Luckily none of it is really life threatening. Just some very painful distractions.CaseDogg wrote:man you always got some fucked up shit happening to you. and you're one of those "healthy" guys lol.

Re: Had my first ambulance ride today
ouch...
can you describe the pain? Was it sharp and acute? Was it constant? Did it depend on how hard you squeezed your muscles (the ones that initiate urine flow)?
Did the opiates do anything at all to ease the pain?

"on a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pain?"tnf wrote:it is interesting to look at how the body starts to respond when you reach a level of pain where there is no possible way to manage it mentally or with drugs.
"i'm going to rape you in the face."
"ok, i'll write 10+."
