Little more complicated than that, and do you honestly think I would still be dealing with this if a simple change in diet/water could fix it?

Exact reason isn't known - some people produce them despite showing no abnormal levels of calcium, magnesium, etc., in their blood. My blood work is perfectly normal. There is some enzyme not doing its job probably. The years of high protein diets before I hurt my neck didn't help - high protein diets can increase the chances of more than one type of stone.

can you describe the pain? Was it sharp and acute? Was it constant? Did it depend on how hard you squeezed your muscles (the ones that initiate urine flow)?

Did the opiates do anything at all to ease the pain?
Pain is sharp and acute as the stone moves into the bladder and then out the urethra (extremely sharp and acute in the urethra). Pain is constant (sort of - there are still waves of pain that build up, but you are going from a low of a 10/10 on a pain scale to a 20/10 when it peaks), intense, unbelievably so as the stone is stretching the ureters out when it moves from the kidney to the bladder. The pain radiates a lot - so when the stone is in one spot the pain may radiate from one end of the UT to the other.

Again, smaller stones (2-3 mm) may hurt a lot, but nothing at all like what this one did.

I finally got rid of the bastard. The pics are not fun to look at but I can post if people want to see it.

Here are all the pieces. The cat scan showed that this was all one stone when it first started passing, broke into 3 pieces.
Imagine all this trying to fit through the ureter at once.

Jesus, they look like aborted nougat fetus'.

Seriously though, wtf are they? I've heard they are calcium deposits, but you would never think that just by looking at them.

There are a few different types of stone - a lot of them are calcium oxalate - an insoluble salt of calcium. Others are formed of uric acid - and sometimes you can get a tiny uric acid crystal that can serve as a nucleation site for calcium oxalate to crystallize around. Uric acid stones can be associated with gout and can be related to high protein diets or issues with metabolism of nucleic acids. I have calcium oxalate stones, but was treated for uric acid stones for years - which actually can make the calcium stones worse. High protein diets also lower citrate levels in the blood, IIRC, and citrate helps reduce stones by keeping calcium in the form of calcium citrate (a soluble compound). Read a study a few years ago that showed that a low protein diet was more effective at managing calcium oxalate stones than a reduced calcium one was, seemingly counter intuitive but probably speaking to the importance of citrate in preventing stones. American diets high in protein and oxalate are an issue for a lot of stone formation - also high in salts, probably due to dehydration. Stones are apparently becoming more common in young kids - definitely, IMHO, due to the diets and drinking too much soda and not enough water.

The doc said that those stones are like 'kidney boulders' when you consider they were all in the ureter at once.

Good times. Someone else here will have one at some point I'm sure, so get ready.

The uric stones reminded me of a visit to the vet center at The Living Desert. The chief vet stated that most of the desert tortoises have within their bladder a single, giant urolith of uric acid crystals.

So, if its any consolation, at least you aren't a turtle.

That top one, that's a bloody big rock there.

Yeah a guy at my work left work in an ambulance cause of kidney stones... I hope I never have to deal with it. So far so good...I drink energy drinks and pop like crazy though I heard those were bad for causing that shit.

I would imagine ingesting any sort of diuretic constantly (coffee included) would increase your chances of these stones.
